Age Group Rank = 5/78
Pre-race routine:

Got to the race nice and early and spent time relaxing in the sun.
Event warmup:

Ran ~2 easy miles before the race.
Swim
  • 13m 34s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was disappointing. I just wasn't feeling it. I didn't necessarily make any mistakes, but just couldn't hold a hard pace.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure - just haven't been in the pool enough, I guess.
Transition 1
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

I misunderstood info from a race volunteer about where to mount my bike and accidentally mounted the bike at the wrong set of cones heading out of transition. This unfortunately affected my bike time, because I had to mount, dismount and mount again.
What would you do differently?:

Watch the mental errors. Know the course before the race.
Bike
  • 33m 13s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 22.45 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a very good bike ride. This was the highlight of the race. I felt very good for the most part and stayed cool. I had a few times where I passed people only to have them pass me again or latch onto the back. In all cases, I was able to pick up the pace for a couple of minutes to put some distance between us.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than get on the bike at the right place.
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Very bad mistake here -- I left transition without my race belt! I had to go back through transition to get it, and ended up at the wrong rack, scrambling to find it. This mental error cost me at least one spot in the standings, and possibly a medal.
What would you do differently?:

Not make mental errors. I guess I was in too much of a hurry.
Run
  • 24m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a disappointing run. It was very hot outside, and I felt it from the beginning. I had problems breathing right out of transition and had to take 3 shots from the inhaler. Once I got that taken care of, I just couldn't push the pace where I wanted it to be. T about mile 2 I started to get dizzy, but continued to push the pace. At the end of the race, I vomited in the transition area and had to do some serious rehydration.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder, and specifically in the heat.
Post race
Warm down:

Exercised the abdominal muscles by vomiting on the grass.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat and mental errors.

Event comments:

Top notch event. Well organized, and you can't beat the feeling of racing through the streets of Austin!
