Swim
Comments: Wow. Well, the white caps made the swim an extreme challenge. I have never come close to swimming in water like that, and that includes my last HIM in Boise where we had a lot of swells and wind, too. This was insane, but I'm glad they at least let us swim 1/2 of the course. (At least I HOPE it was 1/2 the course. Judging by my time, it was...) At first I was bummed they only allowed one lap, but after I finished, I was extremely happy I didn't have to swim any more in that lake. Transition 1
Comments: Okay T1. Didn't wear a wetsuit, but struggled to get my jersey on. What would you do differently?: Wear jersey in water with HR strap on. Bike
Comments: Wow. Well, as long as there was a tailwind heading south, this was a good ride. It's a flat course, so I was hoping to do really well, and 18.7 mph is still nothing to sneeze at, given the extreme wind out there. There just isn't much in the way of shelter, so the cross-winds were blowing me all over the place. Coming back (north) I was hammering just to hit 12-14 mph. And then it hailed and rained the last 8 miles or so. Overall it was a painful ride, but I still hit my goal of <3 hours (barely!). What would you do differently?: Nothing. Kept some in reserve for the run, something I didn't do last year. Transition 2
Comments: Great T2 for me... Run
Comments: Was doing well until my calf pulled again at about mile 7.5 or so. Had to stretch and walk for a mile or so, then ran again. Felt okay at the end, but it really destroyed my run for the most part. Until then things were going really well. In retrospect, though, I think I was lucky it didn't re-injur earlier in the race. So, overall an okay run for me. 10 minutes faster than my last 70.3 in Boise in June, so a bit of progress. What would you do differently?: Not have my calf pull... Post race
Event comments: I did this 45 minutes faster than last year, so I have to feel good about that. Still, SO MUCH to improve on... Last updated: 2009-05-22 12:00 AM

Up at 4:45...Got to the venue by 5:45.
A HUGE windstorm blew in literally 5 minutes before the 1st wave, so warm up consisted of waiting 45 minutes in the the hopes that it would blow over (it didn't) and trying to keep warm.
