Pre-race routine:

My boyfriend Matt and I got up at 5:20 after hitting the snooze and crawled out of bed. We ran another mental checklist of everything we would need and verified that we had it. We ate wheat bread with peanut butter and coffee. Loaded the bikes and we were off to Mt Gretna...about 45 minutes away.
Event warmup:

I had attended the beginner's clinic at the event the night before, which was a huge help. I was able to register Matt and I and get the race bags so we didn't have to worrry about that when we arrived. It also allowed me to scope out the transition area, etc.
We drank a ton of water the day before and morning of the event, as it was to be about 85degrees.
We got there early so we had time to set up transition area well, get marked, and relax and stretch.

Swim
  • 00m
  • 500 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was in waves by gender and age group. The water felt good, even though it was a little cold. It was very organized. The waves left about 3 minutes and each had approximately 60 people.
What would you do differently?:

Matt and I worked hard at the gym for the run and bike but did not prepare enough for the swim. That is the most important thing we will take away from the event. I have swam competively from ages 8-19 so I thought I would call on that technique to get me though the swim leg...boy, was I wrong. I did maintain a level technique and breathing but I felt like I was going no where!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

This went well but I was winded from the swim so it was slow. I was just trying to not DQ! I do not have my times as of the time of this race report.
What would you do differently?:

I would run in and out faster.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 16 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Course was beautiful; took a gel pack at about mile 12 and it really helped me alot to finish those last hills.
What would you do differently?:

Matt and I were riding hybrid bikes. It was my first Tri and his 2nd. We were getting passed by people on tri and road bikes. If we want to continue competing, we will have to invest in faster bikes.
Matt and I were getting passed by people that we know we could have taken if we had faster bikes.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I was worried that I would have "jelly legs". I had run 1 or 2 transition workouts and felt horrible. BUT...I felt really strong out of transition once I got my pace and passed a couple of people right out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I felt good about it.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.11 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

I felt stronger than I thought I would. I was able to find my pace quickly. Amen! all that time on the treadmill/on the road paid off. I am extremely competitive so was constantly striving to pass someone to keep me focused.
What would you do differently?:

Do more running...always room for improvement.
Post race
Warm down:

Matt was done before me and cheered me on coming in. Lots of water! There was beer and after-race activitied but we left pretty quickly to get on with our day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More training..especially with swimming!

Event comments:

I definitely would do it again next year.

Course: Was extremely hilly!!! At 4 miles, there is a ridiculous hill that many people got off and walked the bike. The course is gorgeous. It was very varied...hills, straight a ways, downhills. At miles 4, 8 and another one at the end...are big hills. It was well shaded with trees. The course is an open course and there were cars passing people on both sides. It was a little frustrating at times. The volunteers did a good job of notifying you of upcoming turns and were focused on safety. I heard an ambulance and police car at one point. Matt told me later that he saw someone that had taken a bad fall from the bike and had road rash all over his back and was bleeding pretty heavily.
