Pre-race routine:

Woke up early and headed to race. Caught in traffic entering the park, so turned on a CD to focus on race. Ate breakfast bar, some mixed nuts, and some strawberries. Arrived. Set up transition. Stretched. Waited. Waited. Waited.
Event warmup:

Just some stretching. Went under the water to make sure the temp wouldn't surprise me.

Comments:

Did breast stroke almost entire time, except when passing. Just not comfortable with freestyle in OWS in the pack. I like being able to pop up each breath, navigate, and see everyone around me. But, I'll keep working on freestyle.
What would you do differently?:

I felt pretty good. I'm not used to the rough and tumble of the pack, so I need to be a bit more assertive in terms of passing. I let some opportunities to get ahead go.

I felt much better about this T1 than at my prior 2 tri's. However, it didn't seem to go any faster. I mentally walked through transition a few times before the race, and that helped. But not enough!
What would you do differently?:

I'm getting some Yanz or other pull laces for my shoes. I'll just learn to be faster.

Have to get faster. Could have run more with my bike to the rack.

Hard first mile. Downhill at the turn motivated me to step it up. Started to cramp in my quads last 1/4 to 1/2 mile but just pushed through. Hated running uphill into the finish. I was happy to be under 9 1/2 minute miles. Next year I'd like to be just under 9.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks. More running.

Warm down:

Walking around looking for my family. Walked off the cramps. Hung out with OLY race completed. Ate snacks. Went and got a burger.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of practice since last tri.

Event comments:

The race instructions seemed disjointed pre-race. There were a lot of questions about the swim course especially. I did appreciate that each racer had a designated spot to rack in the transition area. It made it easier to find a spot upon arriving and much easier to find my bike/spot during transitions.

Course: Did it on a mountain bike. Hilly, including some pretty steep ones. Up to the turn was a pretty long climb with some minor plateaus. Of course, that meant that at the turn there was a steep downhill followed by some rolling areas and more downhill. I was able to rest my legs a lot at that point and speed up my return trip.
