Swim
Comments: Terrible swim. Those 2 words sum it up pretty well. This was by far the worst swim time I have ever had. I don't know if it was because it was my first time and I didn't really know what to expect or just a bad day. There was A LOT of pushing and shoving it was just a cluster-you-know-what. I never got into any kind of rhythm and it was just overall bad. I swallowed quite a bit of water a couple of times and at the exit I actually got dunked 3 times!!! Arg!!! This will need to improve. What would you do differently?: I think next time I will just go wide and try to find my rhythm. I think I would have been much faster had I been able to swim like I was supposed to even if I had to go farther. I guess I should be more cutthroat like those who swam over me but I just have a hard time being that rude you know? I had better improve on this in two weeks time. Transition 1
Comments: Everybody who finished ahead of me had quicker times and all but one below me had worse times...I didn't think I did that bad but looking at some of the other times I am very impressed how quick they were. Of course with my shoes it is always going to take me longer because they are biking shoes and I have to put them on before I start running. Overall I thought this was oK. What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: I was VERY pleased with my bike results. This was the first time I broke the 18 MPH barrier and I was thrilled to see that. I guess it was partially because I hated to be passed and I liked passing people so any chance I had to pass I did. I also tried to really ramp up the speed on the downhill portions of the track so I could get a good run at the uphills that followed. I got passed by quite a few people but I passed more than passed me!!I actually thought about it afterwards and thought I could have done better(next race?). When I got to the dismount area I almost fell over though, it had to have been humerous to those watching. I unclipped and when I went to get off the bike either my legs didn't work right or I caught too much of my butt on the seat but front of the bike went way up in the air and I had to hop backwards a bit while yelling "WHOA!!". Then I kinda laughed out loud and said "that was close!!" Too funny!! What would you do differently?: Maybe push even more during the middle portions of the race. Transition 2
Comments: Well, the first problem I had was when I sat down to get my shoes off my left calf cramped big time!! I mean a full fledged WHAM!! I was able to grab my toes and work it out fairly quickly, but it worried me for the run. I switched shoes and socks and got going to the run in what I thought wasn't a bad time, until I looked at everyone elses. What would you do differently?: I would probably not bother switching tio the running socks and just wear the riding socks. Run
Comments: Well, when I started the run I thought it was going to be worse than it was. My legs were like jello and I just could not et them to take big strides like I wanted. Since only 3 or 4 people had worst times here I should be upset but at that point I was just thinking put one foot in front of the other!! My back started bothering me in the first 1/2 mile. Just a weird pain in the lower back/kidney area. I did see the guy who finished ahead of me pass me and knew it but couldn't do anything about it. I tried to grab a gatorade at the first mile and after choking down half a cup said no more of that. I guess I need to work on running and drinking. About 2/3 of the way through the run my legs started to feel better and the back pain went away. I was able to pick it up a little but not as much as I wanted to. What would you do differently?: Practice more bricks!!! Post race
Warm down: I didn't do much here at all. I just put my hands on top of my head and walked around a bit. I got a water and went to the food tent and got a sandwich (or 2) and a bagel piece. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not training the 2 weeks prior due to my knee. Event comments: For my first tri I thought this was a nice race. Of course I have nothing to judge it on, but I didn't see anything lacking that I needed. The swim could definately be improved. The exit area was just too small and the sprint finishers were leaving at the same time as the olympic finishers which made it very crowded. Hey I am not going to complain too much. It was my first triathlon and my bike kicked @$$!!!! Last updated: 2009-05-26 12:00 AM

Arrived at 525 AM for 530 check-in. Since this was my first race I didn't have a clue what I was doing and after 3 trips back and forth from the car I finally got everything in place. I learned that I needed to buy one of those handy little race belts that you can pin your number to so you don't pin your jersey/shirt. I also realized I should have brought flip-flops to walk around in, and I think next time I will swim in a shirt. Body markings and chip retrieval were very easy and a "veteran" told me to put my towel on the other side of the rack so during transition I would be on the right side to just grab the bike and go. Hey every little bit helps right? As far as food goes, I got up that morning and ate a banana, an apricot, and a breakfast cookie they gave out. Was it enough? I think so.
Didn't really do too much to warm up. Some good leg stretches followed by arm circles and shoulder shrugs. I figured I was either ready or not ready by now.
