Total Time = 1h 26m 46s
Overall Rank = 422/700
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 16/32
Pre-race routine:

Packed my bag and loaded my bike the night before. Left at 5 am to drive to race. Drank some orange juice and ate a white chocolate macadamia Clif bar on the way.
Event warmup:

Got my bike racked and got acquainted with the lay of things. Swam 100m warm up in pool which felt great. It was a bit of a surprise when I swam in this 50m pool last year after swimming in a 25 yard pool at the gym. Ate a fruit leather and headed back to the pool and chatted with others while waiting for the swim. Listened to the race directors warning about the heat. Hottest race day ever in their 12 years. I don't know what the temp was at race time (it was 83 degrees at 5am!).
Swim
  • 07m 27s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt great! I think it helped warming up in pool ahead of time. I reminded myself to focus on my mechanics. Only took a couple of breast strokes to sight the swimmer in front of me. Passed one swimmer and was on the feet of the swimmer seeded directly in front of me most of the swim but at a very comfortable pace so stayed there.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Best race swim yet! (Knocked off 29 seconds from last year!)
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

Felt really good in transition. Grabbed a quick drink. Put on my thin Asic socks and Nikes with Yankz. Chatting briefly with the swimmer in front of me. Went ahead and put my race belt/number on. I'm always afraid I'll forget it for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Felt organized and focused wanting to cut time from my T1 from last year. (Knocked off 30 seconds from last year!)
Bike
  • 35m 49s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Figured I'd push it on the bike because it was so hot, I knew my run was going to suffer anyway. And it felt really good! Didn't bother with gloves or sunglasses. When it's so humid, it just seems like the glasses fog up and are more of a hassle.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing but more time in the saddle training. (Knocked off 1'20" from last year!)
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Removed my helmet. Grabbed my hat, iced down water, iced rag and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 39m 42s
  • 3 miles
  • 13m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile was very tough but felt better as I went along. Ate a fruit leather while I as trying to get my legs. It was very HOT but felt I managed the heat okay. The volunteer at mile 1 got a little over zealous with spraying water so my shoes were soaking wet for the entire run. I had thin socks on so felt my feet were slipping the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Race in cooler weather?? The race is where my ranking always drops, so just more running. Hopefully joining USA Fit will help. (But ... knocked off 1'21" from last year!)
Post race
Warm down:

Got an iced down rag, drank a coke, ate a couple peanut butter cookies and small piece of pizza. Changed out of my wet clothes and sat in the shade talking with a first timer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The HEAT!! Need to work some more on bricks although my brick at the gym (10 mile bike and 1.5 mile run) felt great earlier in the week.

Event comments:

The field limit for the race was 700 and there were over 80 racers that were DNS (over 10%)!!! I'm sure it was due to this crazy heat wave we've been having. It was 96 degrees when I left the race at 11am.

Last year I wanted to beat a time of 1:30 and went 1:30:26. This year I was just hoping to beat my time and CUT OFF 3 minutes and 40 seconds!! I felt GREAT about the race and was really happy with my time and sitting at 50% of my age group.

Remembered to start my watch but don't know what happened because I didn't realize it hadn't started until the middle of the bike - ugh! When I got out of the swim, I looked down and it said 7:40 which just happened to be the time I put for my seeding so thought it was my swim time!

Didn't realize I hadn't got my watch started until half way through the ride. I had my bike computer so was able to check my pace and time.

Course: Great bike course (loop) with small changes in elevation, just enough to keep it interesting. Two areas of little brick crosswalks to get over which were very jarring.

Decided I'd start my watch on the run since I was hoping to beat my last year's time.
Course: Fairly shady run in neighborhood and park. Water at transition, mile 1 and mile 2. The volunteers had tapped into the fire hydrants at mile 1 and 2 to spray us down and there were also iced down sponges which felt great.
