Swim
Comments: I felt great throughout the entire swim. Never felt short of breath and the shoulders were able to pull through and get used to the feeling of wearing a wetsuit. Overall I was pleasantly surprised with how well I did on the swim. What would you do differently?: More speedwork during training, and work on utilizing drafting opportunities. Transition 1
Comments: Overall went pretty well, although the run from the beach seemed very long. Struggled a bit getting my socks onto wet feet (don't have clipless pedals and shoes so I just wore my running shoes with socks). Helmet on and threw some Gu into my tri shorts pockets and took off. Mount was pretty good although it was pretty backed up with people right away. What would you do differently?: Put my helmet on while taking off my wetsuit. Hopefully next time I'll have clipless pedals to save some time there. Bike
Comments: It took a while to get the legs warmed up on the bike, probably about 6 miles before they started to feel good. Having ridden the course before definitely helped so I knew what to expect. I felt pretty good about most of the climbs, but could have gone faster on most of the downhills to make up for lost time. Chain came off around mile 13, but was easy enough to pop back on so I didn't lose too much time there. Managed to stay close to my goal of 1:30 for the bike course so that was good. What would you do differently?: Hit downhills harder to gain lost time. Also put my gatorade into a water bottle so it doesn't splash all over my hands and bike when I go over a bump while trying to open it :-P Transition 2
Comments: Very fast transition since I was already wearing my running shoes. Just needed to rack my bike, lose the helmet and grab the number belt and I was off. What would you do differently?: Nothin' Run
Comments: I got my butt kicked super bad on this run. I thought I was prepared for it since several weeks earlier I had done a 23 mile bike, 6 mile run brick session and managed to run the whole thing, but the combination of big hills a very fast heart rate forced me to switch between walking and running throughout the run. This was definitely my weakest segment so I'll need to work on that in the future. Also had a weird upper right ab cramp toward the beginning of the run which I'm not sure of the cause of, possibly eating/drinking too late in the bike. I managed to finish strong, while fighting through calf cramps that came on right at about mile 6. What would you do differently?: Train more for bike/run transition. Also train higher than the mileage for both bike and run so they are both easier. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and stretched. Drank water and Gatorade. Watched the awards ceremony and claimed my beer mug since I was the only one in my age group :) What limited your ability to perform faster: My running training could have used a bit more work. Event comments: This was my first ever triathlon and I was ecstatic to just finish. I'm excited to do more and improve on my performance here. Also I was the only one in my age group so I won a beer mug, which was an awesome reward for finishing my first triathlon (besides the immense feeling of accomplishment of course!). Woke up around 4:45 and ate a bagel with cream cheese with some water to go with it. Checked to make sure that I had all my equipment in my bag and packed it into the truck. Headed over to Governor Nelson around 5:45 and set up my transition area. Then headed down to the beach, went to the bathroom, and put on the wetsuit.
Light swim about 20 minutes before the start of the race.
