Swim
Comments: Swam pretty well for me. Given that most of my times for 1.2 miles in training were coming out between 47-52 minutes, felt I did pretty well. What would you do differently?: Go a little harder, and start closer to the group instead of outside and to the back. First tri experience, I was just trying to not freak out. Now that I am more comfortable, next event I will be closer to the pack and turn harder Transition 1
Comments: I did most things correctly on the suit removal. Left cap on, goggles up and peeled top half of suit off while running from lake to T1. Had a hard time getting suit off of heels and folded away. Socks went on relatively quickly, as did shoes. What would you do differently?: Definitely need to work on transition rehearsal more. Setup was good and layout was done well, just needs to be faster Bike
Comments: This bike course was brutal, felt almost entirely uphill and very hard to get a decent rythm going. When uphill, focused hard on working gears and maintaining cadence, downhills were so fast that it was hard to focus on fluid/nutrititon intake. Because I didn't focus on this, my quads cramped up at about mile 45 and could feel myself bonking from 50-56 (got a little better right at the end). By the time I caught it, it was too late. What would you do differently?: Definitely more hill training to prepare for this, but the biggest thing that I would do differently would be to take in more food and more electrolytes at regular intervals Transition 2
Comments: Just trying to loosen up legs in transition, wasn't focused enough to multi-task the shoes, helmet, hydration belt and race belt. What would you do differently?: Would have taken in more electrolytes 6-10 miles before completion of bike in order to be more fresh and focused Run
Comments: Course was way brutal, ran most of the flats and downhills, but quads were cooked by the run, so cramped up with each uphill segment, leading to a lot of walking. Drank too much water, not enough sportdrink/electrolytes, which didn't help at all. Hill after hill after hill, once again up and down and very tough for first tri. What would you do differently?: Drink less water, more sport drink. Without the electrolytes, just could not get the legs to cooperate. Also should have pushed harder and focused more. Post race
Warm down: Sat down, friends handed me a beer, ate two hot dogs and peeled shoes and socks off to walk around on the cool grass. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nutrition....without a doubt, did not do a good job in disciplining myself and having enough at hand to deal with the toughness of the course. Also needed to do more hill interval training (in my opinion, that would be the only thing to do in training for this course) Event comments: Race was pretty well organized and the aid stations were pretty much first rate and volunteers were very helpful and supportive. All athletes and people lining the course were very positive and made a newbie feel pretty good, even though I wasn't happy with the time, I was estatic that I finished and was happy to have the FIRST TRI in the books Last updated: 2009-05-31 12:00 AM

Terrible night's sleep (way too nervous) and used every mind trick I could think of to go to sleep. Woke up and ate bagel w/PB and banana and glass of sport drink. Should have eaten more in hindsight. Made it to event with plenty of time to set up transition. Only thing that was forgot was sunscreen (not bad for first tri ever).
Got very little warmup done, with exception of some stretching. Way too geeked up watching the pros go off on the swim
