Swim
Comments: Being my first triathlon, I had trouble with starting with a bunch of other people. The first 150 meters was kind of annoying because I had the whole ramming into everybody else deal, but I survived. After that, I didn't have too much problems, other than struggling to find good form. What would you do differently?: Practice swimming more often in open water, and focus more on better form. Also, start more on the edge, rather than the middle, so I don't have so many people in my way. Transition 1
Comments: transition went good. Felt disoriented coming out of the water and therefore ran kind of slow to the transition area and had a tiny bit of trouble taking my wetsuit off and buckling my helmet (took 3s instead of the normal 1s). What would you do differently?: Just practice my transition a bit more and work on running out of the water so I'm not so disoriented next time. Bike
Comments: I had the worst back aches during the bike, so therefore I was stuck with having to not use my aerobars very much, which probably slowed my avg pace a good amount. But luckily, I was able to maintain a decent pace on the top bars. Passed quite a few people, but got passed by some speedsters on Specialized Transitions and Cervelo time trial bikes. Probably went a bit too hard (as evidenced by my run report below), but overall not too bad. What would you do differently?: Figure out how to increase my back flexibility so I can ride aero more. Riding more and getting a new bike/parts would probably boost myself a bit more, too. Transition 2
Comments: Got off bike fine, ran into transition, put bike on rack, slipped into my shoes and ran quickly out of transition! Good...except for one crucial thing... MY HELMET! This is where I showed my triathlon virginity... I was so excited to run that I forgot to take my helmet off!!! A hundred yards or so out of transition a lady said "Can I take your helmet for you?". I couldn't believe it, but it was true. I had forgotten to take my helmet off at transition! So I took it off and gave it to her... other than that, it was a very fast and efficient transition, I guess... What would you do differently?: duh... Run
Comments: The helmet debacle was the start of my problems. I was exhausted by the time I started the run and my back hurt. So got slowed down to my 8:30 easy run pace. Sprinted past a couple people at the finish (I have always been a strong finisher). What would you do differently?: DO MORE BRICKS!!!! and run more in general. not get discouraged by something like Helmetgate. Run on trails more often. Post race
Warm down: Got my medal. Grabbed some food. Found my parents. Found my $%#$@% helmet! Looked at my results. Walked around. Drove back home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of quantity and quality of training. Lack of back flexibility. Beginner's nervousness and luck. Event comments: Good first triathlon. Plan on doing 2 or 3 more this summer along with a fall marathon. Last updated: 2009-05-31 12:00 AM

Got up at 4am, out the door by 4:30. Had to run around to break a $50 bill so I got there around 6:30. Set up transition area, and then waited for my parents to get there and gave them my stuff.
I swam a little to get a feel for my wetsuit since I'd only practiced with it once before. Jumped around a bit to try to stay warm in the colder air, talked to some other triathletes.
