Pre-race routine:

Awoke @ 4:00 AM. Ate a bowl of cereal, as opposed to my usual "oatmeal" routine, & drank about 2 cups of coffee.
Event warmup:

15 minutes priot to race time I swam approx. 200 yards. Remained in water & did some light stretching.
Swim
  • 20m
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

This swim portion was pretty tough, and the water was a bit cold (no wet suit.) There was a descent chop to the water with some white caps (caused by the S/SW wind) along with about 1-foot swells. This made navigation very tough. The place looked like a plane crash! People were continuously swimming zig-zag trying to get back on course. To top it off, event organizers decided on giving everyone "orange" swim caps. Hmmmm...same color as the bouys? It was almost comical. Much of the time in the water I was very much afraid that someone was not going to make it. And yes, I had numerous occasions of waves hitting my opened mouth and hammering my arms as they tried to reach forward. I'm just an average swimmer, but I think it was VERY tough for everyone except for possibly the elite swimmers.
What would you do differently?:

With the exception of wearing a wet suit next time, there's really nothing that was in my possible control. As it was, I "over emphasized" my turning during my pulls and reaches. This seemed to help, but I felt that my legs sank more than I would have liked.
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

A really good transition for me, aided by the fact that I did not have to remove a wet suit. I was actually first overall in T1. I can't see my improving much on this time...but 30 seconds would be great!
What would you do differently?:

Next time, I MUST have my gels attached to my bike in transition. I forgot to put them in my helmet before the swim, and therefore...no much-needed nutrition for the upcoming bike portion. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!
Bike
  • 33m 18s
  • 11 miles
  • 19.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode the bike portion as strongly as I had wanted, knowing that my swim was not great and that running is my weakness, I wanted to have a strong ride to see how I handled the run afterwards. I had one 20-oz bottle of Heed on the bike, and finished with about 4 oz left.
My bike split was slower than in my previous race, but there was no wind in that race, only hard rain.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

'Ever see a dummy running out of T2 with their helmet still on? I absolutely HAD to mention this one! Thankfully, someone at the timer line said "you can take off your helmet now." I almost died laughing, and I still chuckle when I think about it. Embarassment aside, I just unsnapped it and gave it a toss towards the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

You guessed it!
Run
  • 25m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out pretty tight, but after about 1/2 mile or so things started to loosen up. I tried to maintain a quick turnover rate, but never really felt strong. This is my fasted 5k so far, though, so no complaints. I know it would have been slower if my brother, who caught up to me with about a mile remaining, ran with me for about 3/4 mile and that helped alot! Yep, he eventually left me behind...again!
What would you do differently?:

Trip my brother!
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked, very little, and hung out at the finish line with family & friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of serious run-traing. It's time!

Event comments:

Since this was not only my very first podium finish, but a first in my AG, I have to rank it my best...so far. The medals were top notch, and even had the AG, Race, and Year info on the backside of the medal.
