Pre-race routine:

coffee! (Did I mention I'm a Starbuck?)

Poached egg with soy sausage on a whole grain English muffin.
Bannana

Got to the event about an hour before the start. Very relaxed, no rushing.
Event warmup:

Watched some of the swim event. Observed how women handle the transition. It was instructive.

Lots of walking around and potty stops (nervous bladder).

Comments:

I finished within the time I thought I would. I feel good about that. I beat the only man in my age division by 17 minutes. That surprises me because I'm a total turtle.

I think one guy who had to do two laps for his event ran by me twice, I'm that slow.

Of the women who beat me the closest to my age was 45 years old.

Overall, not bad for a woman who is 55 and took up running 5 months ago.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster. I need to put in more training time each week. The bottom line is, it isn't going to get any better just thinking about running.

Meet with friends who finished ahead of me to share race stories. Drink juice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough running in training.

Event comments:

I kept wishing I was on a bike. I really enjoyed the Duathlon I did a couple of weeks ago. If I hadn't already registered for this event I would have done the Du here too.

Course: flat trail run. Grass Trail in acceptable condition. I would rather run on dirt. On dirt I can see the irregularities in the surface, grass hides these. Nice thing about grass is little dust to breathe in.
