Pre-race routine:

I didn't get enough sleep the night before, but I felt good when I got up. Breakfast of wheat toast w/PB, half a banana and coffee. Drove down to the park and got a good spot in transition, then hung out and chatted with friends and other racers.
Run
  • 27m 52s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

I paced the first run just right for me. I'm not very strong on the hills, so I just tried to keep slow and steady.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

I'm really surprised at how slow many of the transition times were -- lots of people over a minute. I just kept it simple -- put on my helmet, slipped off my running shoes, slipped on my bike shoes and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing -- speed laces on my running shoes definitely helped.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 31s
  • 18.6 miles
  • 14.98 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm new to biking this year and have only done a handful of rides longer than this. Regardless, I was hoping to be faster but the first big hill took a lot out of me. I just need a lot more miles and more hills. I was able to drink almost my entire bottle of gatorade and eat a gu without crashing - so that was good.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to ride more.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

I almost had an embarrassing moment when I dismounted my bike -- I unclipped my right foot and swung my right leg off the bike and realized I had not unclipped my left foot yet - doh! Luckily I kept my balance and was able to twist my left foot out. After that, it was another simple transition -- bike shoes off, slip running shoes on, remove helmet and go.
What would you do differently?:

Unclip both feet!
Run
  • 30m 35s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

The long hill on the bike and my general lack of bike fitness really took its toll on the second run, but I survived.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to keep building my bike and run.
Post race
Warm down:

Water -- and more water.

Event comments:

I'm new to all of this, but I thought this was a very well run race. The volunteers on the bike course had a quite a bit of traffic to deal with and some tricky intersections. The courses were well marked.
