![]() Swim
Comments: The surf was unbelievable. We had to start 100m north of the chute to account for the southbound current. A tough swim out due to the pounding from the waves. Once I got out around the first buoy, things went surprisingly smooth - good navigation and decent speed. Exit was a little crazy again due to the heavy surf and currents. What would you do differently?: Nothing - did the best I could, given the heavy surf and current. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Good clean transition. Still would have liked to have cut about 30 seconds here. ![]() Bike
Comments: Good bike. The new course is still challenging enough - heading into downtown are a lot of false flats and rolling climbs to keep you honest. I held back a little in a few spots, since I wanted to considerably improve on last year's run and didn't want to blow my legs out completely. I was passing people constantly and no one passed me - that's about all I could ask for. What would you do differently?: Nothing ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I was disappointed in my T2. I was shooting for right around 1:00 minute here, but I had a little trouble finding my rack and the run from the timing mat was quite long. I was off my shoes coming in and dismounted perfectly. Once I was racked I was out quick. What would you do differently?: Take better note of my rack position on the T2 map pre-race. ![]() Run
Comments: Great run. I cut several minutes off last year, which is good, because I'd been working my run a lot coming into this race, and it appears to have paid off. I was gunning for a 6:45 pace, but I wasn't off by very much, so no complaints. Thankfully, it was breezy and cool on the run, which was a nice change. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Maybe push the pace a little harder on the second half of my first loop. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Oatmeal cookies, a couple bagels and some water. Event comments: I enjoy Los Angeles Tri, probably because it was my first. Even with the bike course changes, I found this to be an enjoyable race. Well run, well supported and a good time. Last updated: 2009-06-03 12:00 AM

Up at 3:00AM, ate a small breakfast, showered and headed down to Staples Center. Caught the first shuttle down to Venice Beach. Was unusally cool down there due to the full moon and clear skies, and relatively strong onshore breeze.
Battled my way out into the considerable swell and shore break, as well as strong North-South current. Got nailed by a monster wave on my way out and got quite a scare - it nailed me right after I had duck-dived under a previous one. Did about 250m of warm up then decided to head in because the break was so strong and my wave start was getting close. There were a lot of very terrified looking faces on some of the participants onshore - likely the ones that had no OWS experience. This was NOT the day to do your first OWS.
