Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 and headed out. Stopped at Dunkin Doughnuts for a bagel and coffee me and doughnuts for my daughter. I wanted some but thought they probably would not taste good when I puked them up later with the lake water. When I cam out of Dunkin doughnuts I noticed a guy with a bike on his car and I said he has to be going to the race? So I followed him for 50 miles to the race and lost him in the parking lot...

Event warmup:

Got to the race and went right to transition, we had been down the night before and checked in and drove the bike course.

Got a good spot in the T area close to a corner so when I came through it was easy to find. Walked around - hit the prota potty 48 times and took about a 200 yard WU swim in the dirty lake. Felt really good waiting for the start.
Swim
  • 13m 16s
  • 528 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Plan was simple: beat 1:30 for the total and the breakdown was as follows: 10 Swim 45 Bike and 30 run with 5 for trans.

So I start the first 150 yds going along pretty good, then I drank a bucket of water and the it all went down hill from there. I did some breast stroke to quit choking then rounded the first buoy and started again. I could not get any rhythm so I am now doing breast stroke for about 70-80 yds to get it together. I start back to freestyle making the second turn buoy which is more than a 90 degree turn, I did about a 40 degree turn and did not sight for a good 30 strokes. When I do look up the guys in the Kayak are yelling GO RIGHT! GO RIGHT! So back on course and more breast stroke. I get the willies when people are grabbing my legs or I am grabbing thereis so a couple more breast stroke slowdowns and somehow I finished.

I grab my Garmin from my daughter right as I come out of the water and see that I am at 13 minutes and know that I have to find 3 minutes somewhere.
What would you do differently?:

Train more - the bottom line is that if you don't study you wont do well on the test! I have not put in the work in the water to below 2 mins which is what it would take to make my time goal.
Transition 1
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

Not sure what took so long but, only about 30 seconds more than the plan - I do not wear clipless shoes so I have to put on socks and running shoes, which takes some time but I gain it all back in T2
What would you do differently?:

Next time I will be wearing clipless and will have to practice. I was not unhappy with my time since the T2 time was so good the avg was under the allotment for the goal
Bike

Comments:

I had driven the course the night before in my car and tried to take note of some of the turns and elevation changes. The turns were insignificant but the first half of the ride I struggled with most seem to call "little rollers" There were 2 little climbs that had me out of the seat and shifting that really got the burn going. Garmin says and not sure how accurate with the tree cover but the 2 little rollers that got to me were 15-20% grade? The second half was much better as I carried all the speed I could on the descents to make the climbs easier. Generally felt good about the bike. I watched a mess of good lookin bikes pass me and I passed a few.

All in all I had beat the 45 minute time goal and was relatively happy. the turn around portion of the ride was pretty cool going through the neighborhood and the people were sitting in their driveways as the racers went by. I thought we need a race in Brookstone so I can just sit in the driveway and watch...
What would you do differently?:

Putting the new pedals and shoes to work next week. Need to ride more - not on the SCT. I need to ride some hills and there are none on the SCT. Next year is for nice bikes this year was just about getting to the finish.

Also need to drink more - I hit the water bottle only once during the ride which left me a bit overheated going into the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

I am pretty happy with the time - It looks like I was top 10 in the AG so good enough for me. I beat my allotted time of 5 minutes for total transitions, so good for the plan
What would you do differently?:

Try to be more focused coming into the transition. I was fumbling around with my race belt just standing there when I realized "you can do this while moving you dope".
Run
  • 29m 43s
  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

My goal was 30 minutes and I beat it! I came off the bike and my legs were unbelievably tight. I felt like I was just shuffling the first mile. I started to feel better after seeing the 1 mile mark but still needed about a 100 yard walk to slow the heart. Walked the water station both times and probably walked another 3-4 times for about 100 yds each.

I was watching my waqtch knowing I maybe had a chance at the 1:30 and was yelling at myself (Inside my head so as not appear to be insane) "Just give me 2 minutes and you will make it" Over and over telling myself that if I can just go a little more then I might be able to make the time.

In the last 1/2 mile a couple of people noticed my hat and yelled go Huskers or Go Big Red and that just jacked me up so when I saw the finish around the corner it was just like my experience in the first race, all the tiredness was gone, I had no idea of my heart rate, my legs felt fresh, and it was the sprint to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

The couple of walks that I took were unneeded. They probably cost me only about 30 seconds to a minute, but just for my mental well being I want to "run" the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around - poured 4 bottles of water on my head to cool down then had some pizza.

My daughter hung around trying to get some of the freebies they were handing out then we took off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

"Did not study hard enough for the test" My first race was Callaway and it gave me false sense of security. My swim was bad because I had not put in the work.

I am in a class with my daughter at the West Cobb Y that is a twice a week workout to get a group ready for Lake Lanier. Along with getting her ready for Iron kids and a commitment to break through 1:30 at Lanier, I will ramp up accordingly over the few weeks.

Event comments:

Great well run race - a ton of volunteers and all of them with a positive yell as you passed by. I really liked the TT start for the swim and the Transition area was well set up.

I look forward to next year
