Run
Comments: started off mid-pack, after about quarter mile, looked at Garmin and saw pace at 6:45, which I knew was too fast for a 2 hour race, so slowed down and tried to control breathing, garmin indicated 3 miles, so course was a little short What would you do differently?: pace turned out to be about right, still having trouble running under 8 minute miles without too high of a heart rate Transition 1
Comments: I'm slow with shoes and helmet, I double-knotted laces and don't pre-clip bike shoes Bike
Comments: came out of the park and felt slow because the course was crowded, took a little while to get into a groove, course thinned out toward the middle and into the hills, had one problem where chain got stuck during gear chain and had to stop completely to fix. Course got crowded again toward the end when joining back up with the sprint group. Looked like a lot of drafting penalties were handed out. What would you do differently?: not much, didn't panic when I had the gearing problem, pace turned out to be about right, happy with age group and overall rank Transition 2
Comments: still slow in transition lacing and double-knotting shoes What would you do differently?: not much Run
Comments: legs didn't feel heavy, first mile or so felt comfortable, tried to keep under 8 min pace, second mile when picking up pace, HR went up into high 170's so I slowed down so I wouldn't get injured or have any problems and tried to take it easy the last 1.5 miles or so to the finish What would you do differently?: not much, kept a high heart rate so effort level was there, course was getting hot, happy with consistency of the second run vs. the first run and improvement in rank Post race
Warm down: walked around poured water over head What limited your ability to perform faster: heat on second run, a little congestion on the bike course, lack of duathlon experience Event comments: disappointed that the swim was cancelled, and duathlon is not a strength, bike course was fun and it turned out better than I thought, feel better today than the monday after my previous race Last updated: 2009-06-04 12:00 AM

Overall Rank = 37/137
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 7/20
woke up 4:45, ate banana, English muffin, drank coffee, drove to race, ate 2 powerbars and cliffshots, drank a gatorade
upon arrival, due to stormy weather and rough water, the triathlon was changed to a duathlon, which was very disappointing. A generous person in transition gave me a pair of socks which was nice. Did about a quarter mile easy jog to warm up. Have only ever done 1 other duathlon, running is not a strength.
