Swim
Comments: Good performance. Probably could have cut :15 off the time if one swimmer in front of me would have waited at the wall and allowed me to pass at the 200 mark instead of continuing to block me until the 250 mark. Felt good and really pushed after getting acclimated in the first 50. Passed at least 4 others in the swim. What would you do differently?: Not much really. Submit a faster time for a better seed, but not sure if that would have helped me to avoid the small traffic issues. I've been turning in some faster splits lately, so my submitted time was probably a little outdated. I bested my submitted time by about :25. Transition 1
Comments: Foot was gimpy going into and out of transition. Had a small issue trying to get on the bike (still feeling the sky high HR after the swim) so I had to regroup a little to mount the bike. What would you do differently?: Not have an injured foot. Bike
Comments: Pushed throughout the bike course. Had a couple of spots where the legs wouldn't cooperate, so dropped gears just a bit in order to spin a little more, then went back to a low gear and hammered. What would you do differently?: Try not to have a couple of moments of fatigued legs. Overall maintained a hard pace but still could have kept it up over the duration of the course. Transition 2
Comments: Hobbled into transition with the bike. Not much I could do about that. I think everything at the rack went well. Don't feel like I took any unnecessary extra time. What would you do differently?: Not have an injured foot. Run
Comments: At least I finished. Started to run and had excruciating pain in the foot. Tried to maintain even the slightest jog. About 4:00 into the run I had no choice but to walk. The pain was too intense and spreading into other areas of the foot. However I did not want to walk the entire time and once a couple of age groupers passed me that probably would not normally pass me, I decided to gut it out and jog at the effort I could tolerate on the foot. Really depressed because with the 14/min mile pace I turned in, I would have likely cut at least 9:00 off my overall time if I would have just run an "average" 11/min mile...which would have put me close to the top 10. Very disappointing because everything else in the race went so well and I had so much to give at the end but the body just wouldn't let me. I don't deal with injury very well at all, so this was a tough race. Although I am grateful that I was even able to finish because I was mentally preparing for the letdown of posibly not finishing because of the pain in the foot. What would you do differently?: Not have an injured foot. No more wearing any type of shoes without adequate arch support during shopping excursions or other times where there will be a lot of walking. Post race
Warm down: Nik rubbed the foot; couple slices of pizza, banana, chex mix, gatorade, lots of water What limited your ability to perform faster: Stinkin' injured foot Event comments: Too many bikes crammed on the racks. Aid station 1 ran out of water about the time I arrived (when I was still near the FOP). Aid station 2 was out of water until I got to the station when reinforcements arrived. Friendly volunteers and organizers...just probably too many competitors to adequately handle. Last updated: 2009-06-07 12:00 AM
