Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Saw a couple of folks and chatted then walked down to the beach after setting up for a quick swim.

Comments:

Pretty decent lake swim, strange run up to transition. They had to cover the run up with door mats. Felt really good the first 100m or so and made a good turn at the second buoy to lose a good number that were hanging on. Unfortunately started to catch the wave in front about halfway through, but ended up with decent swim. Not really excited with the time, but considering it put me in 5th in the AG and 32nd OA, I was pretty pleased.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I may have had a little left to push, but I was pushing pretty hard. Just need to keep up Masters.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

A little slow after the long run up from transition, so I wasn't moving at full speed, but sped up after Dollar yelled at me to not let him catch me. Didn't lose any placing here, but didn't gain any either.
What would you do differently?:

Stay 100% focused while being tired
Bike

Comments:

Tough, technical exit from transition out to the course. Run down hill with bike before mounting. Fast downhill after that followed by some short sharp turns before getting on the "real course". Felt like I was pushing pretty hard until Dollar came by and called for me to come with him. It was a great motivator. Kept him in sight until a couple of miles left. It made me realize that I can push a little harder on the bike than is comfortable and still have something left. Lost one position on this leg, but better than normal for me.

What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Decent across the board. Actually picked back up the spot I lost on the bike. Fumbled with the socks a little, but couldn't have been any more than 5 seconds
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Got in, got out. Just don't fumble with socks.
Run
  • 23m 50s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Not what I am usually capable of on a 5k leg, but considering I don't recall being passed that much, I am OK with this for this day. I need to be able to get the legs turning over immediately off a good push on the bike since 5k doesn't give much time for mistakes or warm-up. Apparently, I wasn't paying enough attention as I dropped 3 positions on the run from where I was after T2.
What would you do differently?:

Not get caught by the guy in front of me in the last 300 yards. He got me by about 5 seconds, but I couldn't do anything about it.
Post race
Warm down:

Drink lots of water, chatted with folks, sit in the shade and stretch while waiting for Heather to come in first in her AG for the du-. I didn't have to wait too long (and yes, she did get first in her AG!) Yea!! Had a couple of cookies and oranges while waiting for the awards to start.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills, heat, humidity.

Event comments:

Good race. Lots of volunteers and supplies, although I heard they ran out of cups for water on the run course as the day went on. Not a whole lot of after race activities, but it was just a small sprint.

Time includes long run up to transition. Out of water time was about 10:30. No HR data since the strap fell around my waist about 50 meters into the swim. Kind of annoying since I could actually feel it creating drag in the water.
Suit: De Soto Tri Shorts & NAMC Race Jersey
Course: Point to point, right to left. Weird swimming counter clockwise. I guess it was necessary to ensure we swam directly into the sun. :-)

First mile was bringing the HR back down and also some trail/root navigation to get to the road. Slowed the pace a little, but helped bring the HR under control more quickly.
Course: A couple of nasty uphill climbs through some camping areas. I don't know if it is physically possible, but I don't recall a whole lot of downhills to make up for the ups. Lots of shade though, so that was nice to compensate for the heat. Unfortunately, shade doesn't let you hide from the hills or humidity.
