Hawaii Swim
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 20m 12s
Overall Rank = 201/275
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 29/33
Pre-race routine:

Got up earlier than normal to make the drive from my place in town to the North Shore. Had my usual bagel, banana, and cup of coffee.
Event warmup:

Walked around and stretched.
Swim
  • 15m 8s
  • 437 yards
  • 03m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really slow swim. Swim, reef crawl, swim. Rinse and repeat. Was pushed around by the incoming waves.
What would you do differently?:

Try to avoid the reef.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Didn't realize just how cruddy my feet would be with all the sand, dirt, and dried grass that I had to clean off. Wiped my feet on my towel but it wasn't enough. Getting my helmet and shoes on was easy and had a really short run out to the mount area.
What would you do differently?:

Bring an extra bottle of water to wash off the crud from my feet.
Bike
  • 31m 15s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.20 mile/hr
Comments:

I have to say I was disappointed with my speed. For a much shorter and generally flat course, I was unable to break the 20mph average that I was able to do for a 40k.
What would you do differently?:

Get in more training rides.
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Ugh! Had a real rookie mistake when I hopped off the bike and headed down the wrong row of racks. Headed to where I could have sworn my gear was and couldn't find it. Took me a bit of time to realize I'd gone down the wrong row. Once I'd found my rack spot, getting on my gear was faster than in my previous races.
What would you do differently?:

Don't forget where my rack spot is located.
Run
  • 30m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Was pleased with how I did. Managed to negative split and felt I'd pushed as hard as I could on this day.
What would you do differently?:

Train to improve my speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some water and fruits. Walked to cool down. Met with fellow BTers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I came into the race undertrained. Work interfered with my training since the Honolulu Tri. I think if I can get good, structured training in for my remaining events this year I'll be able to better my performance.

Event comments:

I enjoyed the race except for the swim. I could have done without all coral, but it's par for the course on Oahu's north shore. Will probably do this race again in the future.
