Age Group Rank = 8/16
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:30. Had an ensure for breakfast and cold coffee.
Event warmup:

Rode bike from hotel to race area down the block and then jogged back.
Swim
  • 08m 15s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt like I was steady with my swim and pushed pace just right. I passed one person up and no one passed me.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have cut some seconds off, if I did flip turns instead of putting my head under lane line to get to next lane. I'll keep that in mind the next time I do a pool swim like this.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

I was told that I mounted too early and had to get off and mount at right area. I could have been a little faster when I got to my transition area. (This is my first time racing with clipless pedals, so I'm still a little clumsy)
What would you do differently?:

I'm thinking about not using socks anymore and practice having bike shoes already on pedals. I will need to practice getting into shoes while riding.
Bike
  • 46m 10s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 16.15 mile/hr
Comments:

I actually did better than my original goal time for this part of the race, so that's good. The clipless pedals and cadence monitor also help. I think going uphill was my weakness. Lots of guys passed me on the bike, but I did pass some people myself. There's lots of room for improvement.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do longer rides with more hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

When I was getting off bike at dismount line, I forgot to unclip one shoe, but that wasn't too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to get out of shoes while riding.
Run
  • 29m 18s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran with one of those water bottles that you can attach to your hands, because I didn't want my mouth to dry out in the heat. It worked. I think the transition from bike to run went well, I kept focused on running steadily. When there was about a mile left, I picked up the pace. At the last 400 meters I tried to have more of kick.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure for this race, but I will make sure to do more strides at the ends of my training runs.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank water, ate fruit and bagels that were provided.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

In this race it was the transitions and learning how to race with clipless pedals.

Event comments:

Lots of fun and well organized.
