Swim
Comments: Excellent swim. Held on to the rope and felt the current pulling. Horn went off and I went right into race mode. Straight line swim. I just tried to do it like I've been practicing. Rotate, reach, grab, pull. Transition 1
Comments: Good transition. Long-ish jog from the swim finish to the transition area. Gave me a chance to get my mind set for the transition and the bike. Wetsuit, goggles and cap off, helmet, bike shoes and sunglasses on, and I was off. What would you do differently?: Maybe learn that whole shoes clipped to the bike thing - maybe during the off season. Bike
Comments: Loved the bike. My first race with my new Cervelo P2C and I'm still smiling. I was aero for about 95 percent of the ride. In the big gear up front the whole time, even up some of those hills. Felt great, kept hydrated (even refilled the aerodrink midride). Nice to see the results from riding mostly hills for the past four months (and the trainer for the three months before that). Transition 2
Comments: Bike on rack, bike shoes off, running shoes and hat on. Simple. Run
Comments: And here is where I met my match. For me, this was a decent run but I clearly have to work on my running. I felt good, drank Cytomax and water at the aid stations, but just could not get my feet to move faster. Got a blister almost immediately and although it might not have slowed me down too much, it definitely made me think twice about speeding up. What would you do differently?: Lose some weight. Practice running without socks before the race (I thought I'd be OK since I've never had blister problems before and have been running in these shoes for the past four months). Post race
Warm down: Got past the finish line, got my cold wet towel and finishers medal. I must have looked like hell because two people from the medical tent came over to me to ask if I was OK. Did they come up to anyone else? My wife (who also ran the race) said that no one came up to her so they must have just been looking for people showing "warning signs". Found my wife, got some fluids, a bagel and a banana, walked around a bit and headed over to the pedicabs for a ride back to transition. What limited your ability to perform faster: My goal for this race was to finish under three hours (swim plus T1 in 30 mins, bike plus T2 in 90 mins, and the run in 60 mins). I hit all my time targets so I have nothing to complain about. The race was a learning experience in that I see very clearly what I need to focus on in my training for my upcoming half iron distance race. I'll be out on the road running as soon as the giant blister on the entire right side of my left foot heals. Event comments: Best race I've ever participated in or been to. A large number of volunteers. They were all helpful, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, supportive and accessible. The race was also the Para Triathlon Championship and I was extremely inspired and motivated to be on the same course with those athletes. Last updated: 2009-06-08 12:00 AM

Woke up at around 1 am. Drank some water and tried to fall back asleep for the next three hours until the alarm went off at 4 am. Got up, got ready, drank some more water, grabbed my stuff and headed down to the buses to the transition area. Got my transition area ready, ate a bagel, drank more water, chatted with some friends, walked up to the swim start, waited in line for the porta-potties and tried to relax until a few minutes before the start.
