Pre-race routine:

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Kenosha for the weekend, so I was up at 4 and we left the hotel around 4:30. I racked my bike on Saturday so my fiance dropped me off at the entrance to the park. I found my bike and set up my transition area while I waited for my fiance to ride his bike from the outlet mall. We aired up my tires and then we found a place in the shade to relax. I ate a whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter on it and half a banana before the race.
Event warmup:

My warm-up was walking the half-mile from transition to the swim start 3 times because it was faster to walk back to transition to use the port-a-potties than wait in line at the swim start. I waded into the water to check out the temperature. Relaxed for the last 15 minutes watching the waves before me take off while I waited for wave 17 to be called.
Swim
  • 19m 56s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was was not happy with my swim time. I was hoping to better my time from the Danskin last year, but was actually a minute slower than last year. I felt very uncomfortable from the very start of the swim and was unable to get into any sort of rhythm. I swam a lot of backstroke and side stroke, because my breathing was very restricted.
What would you do differently?:

I definitely more swim practice, especially open water practice in a wetsuit. I don't think I'll ever be a strong swimmer, but I know that I can do better than what I did this year.
Transition 1
  • 05m 8s
Comments:

I was very slow in my transition. Not much more to say, my shoes were ready to go and I had them on quickly.
What would you do differently?:

PRACTICE MORE...
Bike
  • 40m 33s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 18.35 mile/hr
Comments:

I was very surprised with my time on the bike. I felt like I was flying, passing quite a few people. I think this has to be my best ride so far, but I have just felt a lot more comfortable on my bike this year.
What would you do differently?:

I can't think of a whole lot I could have done differently, except I need to work on clipping in more. I could have cut at least 30 seconds off my time if I would have gotten a better start.
Transition 2
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

Again my transition time was slow.
What would you do differently?:

PRACTICE...
Run
  • 35m 3s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

I need to do more bricks... I felt like I had nothing left in my legs coming off the bike. I did a lot more walking than I wanted to. I also found that I was having a lot of problems with my breathing, although I had used my inhaler in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Need to really work on my running, plus more practice espcially more bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

I saw my mom as I was coming into the finish line, so I got my medal and worked my way back to them. I walked over to pack up my stuff in transition and then rode my bike back to the outlet mall with my fiance.
We made it back to the hotel by 10:45 and made it to our seats at Miller Park 40 minutes before first pitch of the Brewer-Dodger game.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to do a little better planning before the race and make sure that I am prepared with two inhalers. I had to use my one inhaler before transition closed at 6:30 and then leave it with my running stuff, so I think it caused a lot of the problems with my constricted breathing on the swim.
Also, I just need to get more swim time in, especially in open water.

Event comments:

I felt this race went better than Danskin last year, due to the smaller field of athletes.
It was also nice to know what to expect, which allowed us to plan for parking a little better this year. my fiance found that it nice to have his bike at the race site so he was able to ride back to the outlet mall with me. Last year I had to wait around 15 minutes for him to walk back to the car.
