Swim
Comments: I was pretty nervous at the start and I was trying to calm down and breathe. The race hadnt even started yet and I was starting to nervously breathe faster. Before the race I was thinking I would start on the far inside of the wave but I ended up kind of in a right middle position but it just felt like the place to start. I think this made me a little nervous as well since in my first race I completely avoided having anyone near me really. At the start I bounced around a little between the 2 people on either side of me but I got away from them pretty fast. I knew I was doing pretty good when I made it through the all of the pink caps and I could only see one gold cap out in the middle of some light blue caps. I didnt head right for him I just picked the straightest line to the finish buoy. It was cool getting out of the water and seeing my coach Mark Dillard cheering for me! I owe part of my success thus far in triathlon to his excellent coaching, Thanks Mark! What would you do differently?: I think the swim is the only place in this race that I probably could have pushed harder. I think as I turned the last buoy I could have made a charge. I stayed at the same pace all the way to the beach because I was worried about getting to the beach and breathing really hard. I was still sucking some wind on the way to transition but it could have been a lot more. Transition 1
Comments: I didnt put my helmet on at the same time I took off my wetsuit. I took the wetsuit off, then shoes on, then helmet on, and grab the bike and go. What would you do differently?: It went pretty smooth I thought but I guess it could have been a bit faster. Bike
Comments: I was in the wrong gear I think to start but I got up to speed in a decent amount of time. I wanted to put down the best possible bike ride I had in me for this day. I didnt want to feel like I could have gone harder like I did in my first race. I rode the whole time thinking "when is Dime gonna pass me? I went back and forth between that and "Dime is coming, Dime is coming". I only got passed twice, and the first guy that passed me I caught and passed back. The other pass was none other than Dick Dime who finally caught me just a couple minutes before the transition. What would you do differently?: I did the best possible bike I could do, I dont think I could have done any better time than this on this day. Transition 2
Comments: I fumbled with my bike because I put it in front tire first and it would start to fall over so I had to spin it around and get to my shoes. Still pretty fast considering. And I had to give a yell out to Dime as he was putting on his shoes as I was running to rack my bike. I was feeling pretty good about the race so far when I got to see him in T2. What would you do differently?: Put the bike in the rack the same way I took it out, Hello McFly! Run
Comments: I was hurting on this run but I stayed pretty ok until the end. I had to slow down a bit around a mile and recover some but I started pushing again pretty quick. At the turn around I really started stretching out my gait and trying to put the hammer down. I felt like I was running in molasses for the first mile and I thought that was going away at the turnaround. The course was short in distance according to Garmins I guess but on the way in I pushed as hard as I could go without going redline. I was in 3rd wave so there werent a ton of people at the finish. The finish was slightly annoying because I was trying to run hard in and the other participants were running out against me coming in. It was awesome to see Dick Dime and Dillard at the finish but I was sucking air like crazy and foaming at the mouth when I finished. It took me awhile to feel normal at the finish. What would you do differently?: I put down the best run I had in me, it would have been nicer to have new shoes but thats all I can think of. Post race
Warm down: BEER!!! Walked around and had some beer and some fruit. I couldnt eat the pizza because I was feeling kinda pukey. I did drink some water too, but the beer was really helping me feel "better"! What limited your ability to perform faster: I need to train more, there is a faster time in me trying to get out. Event comments: This was a great race for me and the tshirt has an awesome graphic on it. I got a sweet beer glass with the logo and 3rd place on it. They also gave away $2000 in gift cards to Bike Source. My coworker Bruce won $150 so that was cool but so many people left it felt like it would be easy to win something. Maybe next time... Woke up at 5 am and started coffee and oatmeal. Ate oatmeal with a banana and honey in it. Drank coffee and waited for mother nature to call but instead it was Dick Dime calling! Its so cool to have Dime as a friend and inspiration to do this sport, I am lucky to have such a good friend. Then I took care of loading everything up and making sure I had every piece of gear accounted for.
I didnt really warm up that much other than jogging back and forth from the porta cans to the transition area. Then I swam for about 2-5 minutes before my wave started.
