Swim
Comments: First open water swim...finished. The first 200 yards were pretty bad. I couldn't seem to get a good breath in without 2 liters of water coming with it. After standing up a few times to return the lake water to it's natural habitat I managed to get something resembling a rhythm going to get to the buoy. Then it was swim for 150 yds until my hands hit the bottom, only to stand up and see that I still had way too far to go to consider walking in. I paid for my lake swim, I'm gonna swim it. So a little more swimming then walk a few paces, jump back in and swim until the end. What would you do differently?: Calm the waters with some type of Greek god-like power... or just practice OWS prior to my first tri Transition 1
Comments: Transition went well, didn't really fumble with anything and didn't forget anything, seems like a small victory for me. No wetsuit, so just goggles, cap and ear plugs out and bike shoes and helmet on. What would you do differently?: Maybe try leaving shoes on bike for next race. I've practiced it enough on the trainer, I should've just went with it. Stopping on the road to clip in seemed like it took a little while more than I wanted to. Bike
Comments: Felt really good and passed a lot of people on the bike. I didn't really think bike was my best portion, but after this race I think it might be. I felt like I had a good, comfortably hard pace the whole time. What would you do differently?: Maybe push myself a little bit more, but even that isn't a big concern for me. Transition 2
Comments: Felt like everything was going really well through T2. Took my feet out of the shoes and pedaled on top, jumped off bike and ran with it to the racks. Running shoes and race number went well too. No complaints here. What would you do differently?: Not drop my sunglasses while taking off helmet, but it only cost me 3 seconds at the most. Run
Comments: Felt really slow on the run, and my times would prove that. Usually during training I was running a 5k around 7:40 pace, but only mustered up an 8:54 pace. Was a little too concerned that I would push myself too much and end up walking at some point. I should've just went for it all and ran it all out. Got passed by a lot of people on the run. Next time though... What would you do differently?: Run until it hurts, then run a little harder. Post race
Warm down: A banana and some light stretching, that's about it. What limited your ability to perform faster: Taking a week off of training right before the race to build a front porch on the house. My run stunk, but man that porch looks good. Event comments: Great swim for beginner triathletes (shallow enough to stand), moderate bike course (some small hills) and a nice run course through the woods. Will try to do this course again next year. Last updated: 2009-06-10 12:00 AM

Spent the pre-race minutes just wandering around trying not to be a total noob. Setup transition then tried to figure out where the course went (so that's what a 1/2 mile looks like in open water, great).
Light jog for about a 1/4 mile and about 20 practice strokes in the water. Yep that's it, totally warmed up.
