Swim
Comments: Not bad, relatively speaking. I think I did a pretty good job of sighting and staying on course. I felt better than I thought I would in an open water swim. Time is about what I expected/hoped for. What would you do differently?: Practice more for longer distances. Transition 1
Comments: Easy enough. Don't have a whole lot of "extras" to bog me down. Did get wrapped up in the moment and forgot to put my helmet on until I saw the first race volunteer. I said I was a beginner! What would you do differently?: Not much. Bike
Comments: Bike was rough for me. Admittedly, I don't train much (at all) on the bike, so that's my first mistake. I use a loaner for race day - it's a great bike and I'm lucky to have access to it. Chain came off twice -probably operator error...set me back a minute or two time-wise, but more than that morale-wise. Ride was tough for me and I never really got into a good groove. What would you do differently?: Train a lot more on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Fine time in and out. Not a whole lot more than switching shoes and chugging some gu. I had a goal of completing the race in 3 hours and knew that I had to get out of T2 at 2 hours...didn't get out until 2:12, so I had to pep myself up assuming that the 3 hours wasn't attainable. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: By the time I got to the run, I had to do some pretty hard core internal pep talking. I knew I wanted to pace myself to be able to have a good kick at the end, but when it came to the last couple of miles, there wasn't a whole lot left. Ran mile 4 with another guy and it was a little more enjoyable and the pace was good. I did end up going a little faster to try to salvage a decent time. I felt pretty good, but the legs just weren't there. What would you do differently?: Train longer distances for sure. Post race
Warm down: Ate a ton of fruit and a cookie. Walk around to pull it together. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor training. I've trained more consistently, but just not at the distances for an Olympic race. Learned a lot and have an idea of what to do before the next one. Yeah, the next one. Event comments: It was a good race. I know that a lot of the comments come off negative, but my expectations were off going into it. I've done okay with the few sprints I've done, and didn't know what I was getting into with these distances. Race was put together well and it seemed to be a good course. Good experience and learned a lot. Great people. Give me a year, I should be back with a few more miles under my belt! Last updated: 2009-06-12 12:00 AM

I put the "beginner" in "beginner triathlete". First Olympic ever after doing a few sprint distances.
Got up at 3:30 to meet up and ride to the race. Quick shower and bar for breakfast. Making sure I've thought about everything. Still surprised at how little I have to pack for a race.
Nothing really. Stretched out a little.
