Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 13/26
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early (did not sleep much). Breakfast from Denny’s in the hotel room (eggs, hash browns, 2 sausages, 1 cup of coffee). Raining up until about an hour before my start time, so I skipped the pre race meeting. Sat around watching the swim and some of the transition activity.
Event warmup:

Not much, did a little stretching on the pool deck.
Swim
  • 06m 9s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not too bad, felt good the whole time, probably could have gone a bit harder.
What would you do differently?:

Not use heart rate monitor during pool swim – just place on the deck, fell off and had to retrieve it during the swim. Push a little more on a short swim like this.
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Took a lot of time, but felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Take a bucket to bring all of the transition gear, then can sit on the bucket to put on shoes.
Bike
  • 40m 18s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 17.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Mountain/trail bike with road tires. Got passed early on, did not want to push too hard and run out of gas on the run. Could have gone a little harder.
What would you do differently?:

Tape the energy gels to the handlebars. Had a little trouble getting the stuff out and back in my pocket. Skip the gloves. Water down the Gatorade did not like drinking that during the bike ride usually just stick to water.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Rode the bike with my running shoes, so this went quick, just ran and racked the bike, grabbed some water and off.
What would you do differently?:

?
Run
  • 29m 22s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Run is the most difficult part for me, so kept the pace low until the last .25 mile. Could have pushed a little harder if I had water to keep cool.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe bring some water on the run to cool down. Run harder the last mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched a little, and drank some protein mix and more water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

General inexperience. Just did not know what to expect, and how hard to push. Bike did ok, but a road bike would help.

Event comments:

First race so I did not know what to expect, but felt really good after the race. Looking forward to another one.
