Swim
Comments: I was in a mixed age group with Females 30-34 and Men 40-44. I did not like this at all. I feel decent about my swimming abilitly, but that's usually against the other women. I didn't like being mixed in with the men, because it caused the chaos of the start to be a million times worse. There was a lot of slashing and fighting in order to find and establish a line of swimming. Once the crowding ended, the swimming was fine, not too many other swimmers got in my way. What would you do differently?: Stay a little closer to the front of the pack. I was scared being mixed in with the men, but I ended up having to swim over just to find a safe spot to swim. Transition 1
Comments: Transition area is crazy to begin with, so there isn't much room to run with your bike. Also, tons of people leaving transition at about the same time, so it was safest to "ease" onto the bike to avoid collision of other competitors. What would you do differently?: Have shoes ready to wear from exiting the swim to getting to the transition area. There is about a 1/4 mile run from swim exit to getting into the transition area. Bike
Comments: Flat, but lots of potholes. Rule in Chicago is ride on left and pass on the right, which is opposite of most, if not all other races. Some people didn't get that rule. What would you do differently?: Ride faster. Transition 2
Run
Comments: I do not run...nor did I train to run. I've never run more than 3 miles consectitively...and definitely not a 10k. I would have imagined I would of been at least under a 10min/mile pace, but I think I ran slower, so that I wouldn't psych myself out running too fast. What would you do differently?: train myself to run a 10K. running is what always kills my overall time. in shorter distance races, I can count on people I out swim and out bike to pass me on the run. but, for my "first 10K" the course was fine...flat and breezy enough so that it's not sweltering. Post race
Warm down: went thru the chute, got my cold towel, ate a banana and stretched out my legs. What limited your ability to perform faster: didn't train myself to do long distances, especially the running. Event comments: Great race...next time i'll be a little more prepared. Woke up super early and drove in from home, about a 45 minute commute from NW Indiana. Ate a couple slices of peanut butter toast and drank my coffee.
First time doing an Olympic length event, so mainly paced and watched the other competitors. Got to the transition area at about 4:30am, and had 4 hours to kill until my wave began. It got a little boring, and I got a little antsy b/c there isn't much to do.
