Swim
Comments: Water was downright hot. The course was very crowded and it never seemed to spread out. I was constantly hitting the people in front of me in the foot/leg and the people behind me were doing the same to me. My goggles fogged up big time. The second leg was into the sun, which combined with my goggles caused me to weave all over the course adding a lot of distance. Finally had to stop and rinse out my goggles and find out where I was. I apoligize to the group of people I led so far off course. After that I got back into the main flow of traffic had to take some very sharp turns around the buoys and was generally glad the swim was over. On the plus side, I kept a nice relaxed smooth stroke throughout didn't burn alot of energy and would made fairly good time if I swam straight. What would you do differently?: Buy some new goggles and sight more regularly. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty good transition, had a little trouble with my socks and took long drink of water before heading out. What would you do differently?: Make sure I pack my racing socks Bike
Comments: Good bike leg (for me). I got right up to speed and found a nice comfortable cadence/pace. I did a real good job shifting gears to maintain a nice steady level of effort. On what little hills there were, I made up a lot of ground and stayed fairly close to the same cadence. I did a much better job taking the turns and cornering (except for the turn I dragged my peddle on the ground (Inside foot up at 12 O'clock dummy!), but at least I managed to avoid wrecking) I made sure to drink every 15 minutes or so and felt really good. Good dry run for the Diamondman next month (I'll see this piece of pavement again). Felt really bad for the dude who just as he caught me we heard the dreaded "Pop, hisssssss" What would you do differently?: Except for the one bad turn, I was very happy with the ride. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition for the most part. Had a little trouble finding my rack and momentarily stopped at the wrong spot. But didn't hurt me too bad. Fast in and out. What would you do differently?: Walk down the transition area from both directions (Swim in and bike in), didn't have time this morning. Run
Comments: For the first time in a while my calves didn't try and cramp up so I got going at a nice steady pace. I managed to maintain and slightly lower that pace (not very much) over the course of the run but I could quite "turn it on" like I did the last two races. There was only 1 waterstation on the course which you hit going out at mile 1 and coming back with a mile to go, however with some 900 runners between the tri and du, they had trouble keeping up with the flow and I missed out the first time by. The volunteers were doing a great job but they were seriously outnumbered by the runners. It was really getting hot, humid, and sticky by this point in the race. A big thank you to the race director for keeping us in the shade. I imagine that conditions didn't help anyone run fast today. What would you do differently?: I was think of getting a cammelback for the Diamondman. Maybe doing a bit more work in the heat of day when you know you are going to have to race in it. Post race
Warm down: I wanted to cool down in the pond, but there was no swimming allowed (except for the race of course). So I hosed off and dump several cups of water on my head. After changing, I still managed to sweat soak my shirt putting my stuff back in the car. What limited your ability to perform faster: Forgot my running shoes last week when I was on the road for work. Fortunately I found the local YMCA, so I could swim and bike on the machines but no running for a week probably wasn't a real good thing. Event comments: This was the first time I did this race and I liked the course and the volunteers did a great job, but there were a few logistical problems that need to be addressed. If your going to put on an event with 900 or so entrants please rent a few more porta potties and put a few more folks at the water station. Aside from that it was a good race with alot of people. Got up at 4:50, drove to Lums Pond. Ate two Power Bars and drank ton of water. Got signed in, bike check, body marked, and set up transition. Then spent next 30 minutes waiting in line for the bathroom. Barely had enough time to get wet before my wave was summond to the start.
Waited in line and sweated due to heat/humidity and fear of missing the start.
