Swim
Comments: Swim was wetsuit legal this year, but I don't have a wetsuit. A lot of people had wetsuits, so I am not too disappointed with my ranking. Wanted to take it easy on the swim so that I could hammer the bike, but I think I took it a little too easy. A little disappointed with my time, but overall not bad. Still, what a difference a year makes - last year DFL out of the water, this year MOP. Swam the whole way without having to flip on my back and breathe or back stroke. What would you do differently?: Without a wetsuit, not much. Probably should have tried a little harder. Need to work on getting faster anyway. Transition 1
Comments: Transition seemed to take forever - not a fast time, but not as bad as I thought. Only problem was getting a shirt on. Need to decide to either go without a shirt or get a tri top. What would you do differently?: Go without a shirt Bike
Comments: Felt great getting on the bike. Averaged 22-24 mph on way out so was really excited until I hit the hill at the turn around. Hill really took it out of my legs. Of course after the turn around you fly down this hill, which with the rough road and pot holes was a little scary. On the way back in I was battling with a guy in my age group riding a Cannondale. We passed each other several times, before I passed him before the turn back into the park. Overall very happy that I was able to hit what seemed to be the illusive 20 mph average. What would you do differently?: Need to work on power/force to get better at the hills. Transition 2
Comments: No problems in T2. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Because of the storm the night before, the trail run was really muddy and trees were down across the trail. At one point had to jump over a fallen tree like in an obstacle course. Felt good getting off the bike and was able to do a 7:00 min/mi on the road to the trail, but slowed way down on the trails, mostly because of the hills. Approaching the finish line I could see that if I sprinted I could beat my 1:48 goal. Gave it every last bit that I had and was able to make it. What would you do differently?: The bricks have definitely worked! For this race, might need to do some trail runs and more hill work. Post race
Warm down: Met Anthony at the finish line and waited for Steve to finish. Sipped on gatorade and enjoyed the fajitas that were the post race meal. What limited your ability to perform faster: I've been working on the engine, but still disappointing when getting passed by the carbon fiber tri bikes with disc wheels. Really need to consider upgrading. Event comments: Race directors did a good job getting every thing organized, especially with the storm that we had the night before. Power went out the night before, packed a little, but hoped the lights would be on in the morning so that I could make sure I had everything. Well, lights didn't come back on so had to get ready and pack in the dark.
Got to the park about 6:45 and set up transition. Of course then it started to rain. Thanks BT - had packed a garbage bag to keep everything dry so rain was not a problem.
Jogged around the park a little bit.
