Swim
Comments: Two weeks ago I went out way too hard and really paid for it through the swim, so I took the start easy and just tried to find a good rhythm which worked better. Sighting was a little off but overall not too bad. This included a run up to transition and my time coming out of the water was actually 15:12. Which gave me a pace time of 2:02/100m, which I was very happy about. In the Clydesdale category I was 6th in the swim out of 12 participants The run up to transition was ok at best as I tried to run the whole way but my legs would not let me and I had to walk for about 30 m or so in the middle to prevent myself from falling over. AG rank:20/35 Clydes rank: 6/12 What would you do differently?: Not much... try and swim faster Transition 1
Comments: After the long run uphill to transition (250 - 300 meters) I was pretty tired and the actual transition suffered a bit. Got most of my stuff on and was out of there quickly. What would you do differently?: Next year learn to mount the bike with the shoes already attached, seems to save a lot of time. Bike
Comments: The bike went well and I knew what to expect from last year. Had a good ride out and back with only some small problems with the hills. I got dropped a few times on the hills, which isn't typical for me. Tried to put in some extra effort but then realized that my legs would be dead for the run so backed off again. Came upon a "pack" of riders, approx 8 or so, who were all riding together and I couldn't get by. I eventually worked my way up and through the group to try and get out of the whole DQ situation of drafting. I pulled ahead of them but then I was passed again as they all flew by me together. A few people who were riding in the other direction were yelling comments like "nick pack" and "DQ"! In the Clydes I was 3rd out of 12. The 2nd place guy beat me by 18 seconds. AG rank: 9/35 Clydes: 3/12 What would you do differently?: Nothing.... train more so that I can push harder and not suffer on the run later. Transition 2
Comments: Still need to learn how to dismount while leaving the shoes on the bike. Coming into transition there was people lining the road at both sides and they were quite a ways in. It reminded my of the mountain stages of the Tour de France where everyone is on the roads cheering What would you do differently?: Nothing. Quick and clean... transition zone was large so I had to run through it and it was my first race with the elastic laces which worked great! Run
Comments: Out of transition and off on the run. It felt good and I was swept up in the cheering. I made it to the 1km marker and I ran 4:54!!!! Way faster then anything I had ever done in training. Decided to pull it back a bit so as not to kill myself before 2km marker. I was ticking off 5:05 - 5:10 mins per km the whole way. Drinking didn't go well.. :( Around 1.5 km was the first aid station. I grabbed some water and slowed a little to drinking it. Did the same at 3km aid station. Well my stomach did not feel good after that. I think it was too much water and it was sitting in my stomach. Really didn't feel good and started to give my cramps, which weren't too severe so I tried to just keep going. Was able to place 2nd/12 (clydesdales) in the run which is awesome for me as this is my limiting factor in races. AG rank: 22/35 Clydes: 2/12 What would you do differently?: Really need to figure out the right amount to drink while running. It is becoming a very real limiting factor Post race
Warm down: Walked around and chatted with a few people that I knew and had had a friendly rivalry with while out on the course. Stretched and got some food. What limited your ability to perform faster: drinking on the run and trying to learn to pace properly for Muskoka next weekend. Event comments: Really good race and I will be doing it again next year. Really enjoyed the race and was able to place 2nd overall in the Clydesdale category!! I was super pumped to be on the podium, as was the fiancee who took tons of pics and was my personal cheering squad. Last updated: 2009-06-14 12:00 AM

Woke up at 6:30 and had the regular breakfast of oatmeal, 2 eggs and a piece of toast. Had everything packed from the night before just had to load the car and then we were off. The mandatory stop at Tim Horton's was made for tea and some food for the soon to be wife (She did get up and drive after all) Made it to the race site in plenty of time this year, since last year I was sprinting down to the water as the horn went off.
Got into the water about 20 mins before the start and did some warm-up strokes out to the first buoy and then back in. Just keeping it really easy and calm.
Due to my "workhorse" build, I was racing in the Clydesdale category under 40 years of age.
