Age Group Rank = 29/34
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:15 and loaded the car. Had a cup of coffee and some water. We were on the road at 5:45. Ate a power bar and had a little more coffee on the way to the race.
Event warmup:

I didn't get there as early as I wanted to so there was very little warmup. Ran from the transition area to my car because I left something there, about 1/4 mile total. I also got in a quick swim just before the start.
Swim
  • 28m 17s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

I stayed in control on the swim and kept my heartrate under control. As a result, the speed and effort were consistent from start to finish and I was not gassed at the end of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Swim straight. I was all over the place. I passed the same guy three or four times because I kept straying off course and he was swimming in a straight line. I probably could have gone a little harder.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

It was a long run through the sand from the swim finish to the transition area. The transition area was nice. We had assigned spots by bib number and each rack was marked.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 18s
  • 40 kms
  • 32.74 km/hr
Comments:

The bike was good. Once again I was trying to stay in control so I had something left for the run.
Transition 2
  • 03m 25s
Comments:

Spent a lot of time trying to tighten my "EZ" laces because once I got the shoes on I wanted them tighter.
Run
  • 54m 37s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 28s  min/km
Comments:

I was very pleased that I ran the entire course without taking any walking breaks. My strategy of saving something for the run worked out well.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Post race
Warm down:

A little stretching and walking. Drank a beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My poor training habits over the last two months.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race. I heard they put on a good lunch afterward, but I didn't stay around for it. The lake/pond is small and protected by trees so there are no waves and the area surrounding Sylvania is flat as a pool table, so the course is not going to kill you. They have more than enough volunteers. I would reccomend this race to anyone.
