Pre-race routine:

I just returned to riding after not doing ANY for 25+ years. The last 3 months have been riding 15 - 20 miles a day approx. 4 day+ per week, spin classes 3 days per week, walk/lite run 2 miles 2 - 3 times per week, swim a mile 1 - 3 times per week. I have a significant amount of weight to lose and want to be smart about it. This is my first event so was just looking for a baseline.
Event warmup:

Early breakfast low fat yogurt and Kashi high protein/high fiber cereal with Almond Breeze & 1/2 cup blueberries. Light stretching and circled the parking lot a few times.

Comments:

Loved the flats and descents...did way better than I expected on the little rollers. I was averaging 17 - 18+MPH until the hill on Rio Bravo. I tanked there. Calf muscles totally locked up. I made it up a little over half way then had to get off and walk (less than 1/10 mi) to stretch out the calf muscles. Then got back on and finished climbing the hill. Was fine after that and able to pick the speed back up after a very short break at the aid station.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time hill training, drop more weight before the event. I was working with the tools I had at the time. I felt really good overall by my performance and encouraged. It helped me pinpoint where I need to work harder while simultaneously giving me a huge sense of accomplishment.
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretch, walk around the parking lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Excess weight is the biggest factor and I'm working on that. Also, not enough big hill (longer than 1/2 mile) training prior to the event. I'm working on that too.

Event comments:

This is my first event after 25+ years of no riding. I have lost a substantial amount of weight but still have 40+ pounds I'd like to drop. I exceeded my expected finishing time by over an hour so very happy and encouraged. I now know where I need to focus more time and training. I will definitely do this event again next year--maybe even go for the 100. I'm looking forward to the possibilities with a training plan.
