Overall Rank = 78/210
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 4/15
Pre-race routine:

I woke up around 4:30 and had my usual bowl of cereal for breakfast. Packed up the wife, dog, and gear and head out. The drive takes a little under an hour. It is a cool morning and there is fog over the fields and water. I love fog!

Forgot to eat my Cliff bar until a few minutes before the race...decided it would be best to skip it all together at this point.
Event warmup:

One last frantic trip to the Port-A-Pottie before my wave....does that count?
Swim
  • 17m 23s
  • 547 yards
  • 03m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

The distance posted here is almost certainly wrong. The online registration said 500 meters but the map said 600 meters. I doubt it was 546.81 yards.

I started well for me but had trouble keeping my breathe for the last 200 or so and had to switch between free and side stroke. I kind of bummed by that but oh well!
What would you do differently?:

Train more. More OWS.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Went pretty smooth. I tried to be quick without rushing. I'm sure it could have been a hair faster but I'm not disappointed with my first effort.
What would you do differently?:

Practice and pick an isle bike slot.
Bike
  • 40m 46s
  • 11.4 miles
  • 16.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Again, not sure on the distance because my bike was telling me 17.1 but the records show me at 22.4. Pretty sure again it was not 16.77! I think they have their distances wrong in their calculations.

I was more winded coming out of the swim that I thought I would be. Stomach cramps early on the ride but settled quickly. Some of the hills were a bit tough but nothing too serious. I did not know how much to save for the run and probably could have pushed a bit more.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder. Take nutrients?
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Got a bit flustered here. A guy was giving me encouragement as I was racking my bike. Among his comments, "good work, looking good, you are one of the last in your age group." Wait, what? I knew I wasn't blazing any trails but his comments confused me. Up until this point I had done a good job of racing my own race. This flustered me and I was thinking about where I was in the pack and was starting to feel down on myself....leading to:

Oops. Forgot my race belt. I rushed this one and made a mistake. Luckily it amounted to nothing in the end.
What would you do differently?:

Move quickly without being rushed.
Run
  • 25m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I was feeling a bit down after the transition and the steep hills right of the bat didn't help. I was able to change my mindset about a mile in and really started to enjoy things again! I fell into a good pace for me and enjoyed the bulk of the run. I was able to finish with a decent kick.
What would you do differently?:

Train more!
Post race
Warm down:

Hugging my wife, petting my dog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The fact that I started training at the very end of May (short training time), a couple of setbacks that kept me out of the pool.

Event comments:

There were apparently some issues with race course markings and some people were thrown off. I did the course in practice so had no issues but I can see where they could go wrong. I'm also skeptical about the results as some of the times and/or distances were surely off.

There was definitely nothing flashy about this race (everyone had the same color race cap regardless of wave, etc) but I didn't really care all that much. I would consider doing this race again but I'm not sure it's the best value for the $ out there.
