Swim
Comments: Swim went okay. Water wasn't as cold as i expected and the glassy conditions made for an easy swim. Got a little physical by the buoys, but nothing unexpected. All in all, I'm happy with the time considering I've only been in the pool about three times since last September. What would you do differently?: Swim more. I was a little gassed coming out of the water, and it took me a little while to catch my lungs on the bike. Transition 1
Comments: I wish I had timed transitions, but they're lumped into the bike times. Could have gone much faster as my number that was pinned to my shirt busted off as I was donning my shirt. Took at least 60 seconds to reattach. Otherwise, it was a fairly uneventful transition. What would you do differently?: Get a race belt! Bike
Comments: Bike computer said 20.2 mph average and 10.2 miles. Felt strong, and happy with the ride. Only issue was getting trapped behind a slowie on a MTB in the single file lane up the hill. What would you do differently?: Not much. Train a little more, but pacing and effort felt right. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition. Took a second to take in some Gatorade, but otherwise, my feet were out of the shoes before I was off the bike, and everything went smoothly. What would you do differently?: Not much. Run
Comments: I think the course was a little longer than 3.5. I think it's more like 3.75 as that was what I had on the bike computer when I rode it last year. I had some cramping in my calf on the first hill, but after than my legs settled down and I ended up in a good pace for my fitness level for the rest of the run. Started a kick a little too early, but still managed to have enough in the tank to pass some people in the chute. Overall, I was happy with the run. What would you do differently?: Train more, lose more weight, but nothing related to race day. Post race
Warm down: Caught my breath. Had some Gatorade and waited for the results to be posted. Event comments: I was very happy with the race overall as it was my first in two years. At 220 lbs., I was happy with my fitness level, and look forward to see what more training and dropping another twenty pounds will do to my time. Hope to break 1:10 in September. Woke up at 5:30, snuck out of the house without waking anyone up, and drove the twenty minutes or so over to Craigville. Got right into a lot, had a Powerbar and a Red Bull. Registered, and then brought my stuff to transition.
I've never been a big warmup person. So, warmup consisted to chatting the other brave souls in my wave that were sans wetsuits.
