Swim
Comments: BTW all my group ranking data is approx. I went to the left end of the line and then went. Wasn't long for me to be clear of most of pack. Kept veering to left so started making conscious effort to swim to the right. During whole swim only hit one person's toes and only felt somebody on mine once. What would you do differently?: I was breathing every 2 strokes and should have gone every 4 at the least. But it did help me sight the buoys. Since it was my first OWS I'm not going to sweat that detail. I could have probably gone a little faster, too. An excellent leg in my opinion. Transition 1
Comments: Long run to transition area. My slot was on the end of the racks and close to the entrance (and then the run-out, too) but I had to go the whole length of transition to exit on bike (and return bike to rack). Shirt on. Helmet on. Gels in short legs. Socks. Shoes. A few swigs of water. Sunglasses & gloves and away What would you do differently?: I'm not wasting alot of time and I'm still new to this so I take a little time to make sure I have everything right. So nothing different for now. Bike
Comments: I was the fool on the hardtail mtn bike that you all whizzed by. That aside I think I did pretty well. Kept my cadence. Used the time to hydrate and take a couple gels. Tried to make myself as aerodynamic as possible to take advantage of some of the fast downhills. What would you do differently?: Except for a bike change nothing. Very happy with the result and time. Transition 2
Comments: Bike helmet, shoes, gloves off. Running shoes on. Flushed my head with some water, wiped off and went. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Those wet towels kept me alive!!!!!!! It was pretty brutal. Course totally in the sun and temp was in 80s by the time I ran. I just kept on going, but kept on telling myself 'slow down' or 'slowdown the treadmill'. I did not want to walk (although I walked a few steps at the stations where I got water to make sure I got it all inside of me). I was happy when I saw the turnaround. Happier when I got back to the sprint turnaround. When I got to the 5 mile mark I knew I'd make it. What would you do differently?: Again, probably nothing. I really don't like warm humid weather. Maybe I could have pushed harder. But then maybe I'd not have made it or would have had to walk. Since I saw the forecast early in the week I made a point to do a few extra runs outside in the hottest part of the day (I usually run at 5AM). I think that may have helped. Post race
Warm down: Find some shade & drink some water. Then more water. For the 2 hr ride home I had the AC on 66 degrees (on the ride down I refused to use it to help me acclimatize!). What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat & high humidity. Event comments: CGI put on a great event. Thanks to everybody involved. One thing that irritated me -- and it was not the organizers' fault -- was all the gu packets I saw discarded on the bike course. The organizers explicitly asked that this not be done. The course goes through MD state lands at one point (isn't it Elk Neck State Park?). I hate to see this event shutdown because MD DNR complains. How hard is it to put the rolled-up empty in the leg of your shorts or the pocket it came out of? Last updated: 2009-06-22 12:00 AM

Went down day before. After packet pick-up, I spent some time walking through all the transitions since the chutes were all in place. Checked-out the layout of the swim buoys. I'd been down a month ago to ride the bike course so I knew the bike & run routes.
Race morning: Up @ 4:00, Cliff Bar, some peanut butter, coffee, powerbar gel & water for breakfast. Drove to race site for 6AM.
My nerves were high since this was my first olympic (2nd tri in all), first OWS, first big tri, and the weather was also a concern. Really hot & humid. I did a swim warm-up of about 10 mins and it helped alot. Then I just walked and lightly stretched the hour or so until my wave (5) went.
