Swim
Comments: with the wetsuit on, I was a little too warm toward the end of the swim, when I had some momentum...wished I could have removed my cap while swimming, to get even more refreshed before the biking. I handled the chop much better than my first attempt at an OWS, the Thursday before. What would you do differently?: swim more consistently. Get used to OWS, to contextualize it with my pool training. There are similarities, but I'm having some trouble concentrating on those...been paying too much attention to the differences. Transition 1
Comments: was concerned about how far the water was from the T area. Didn't want to be exhausted getting on the bike, so I walked for almost half of it. What would you do differently?: move a bit faster getting out of the water, don't want to take my time. I wasn't tired getting on the bike, but I was a bit too cautious. Could've pushed a bit harder. Bike
Comments: I am using my snowboarding helmet, which is fine in cooler weather, but I will probably need a lighter, more vented helmet for warmer months. I skipped using my gloves, and didn't even notice until I was done riding, when I saw them on the ground. I don't have cages nor clipless pedals, just regular pedals. This means all of my energy is only from the downstroke. Having tried friends' Speedplay pedals/shoes, I really want to get a pair of those...it would help me with my consistency, and not waste the upward energy of my legs. Wasn't sure what to expect when I got off the bike to start running, so I did not over exert myself. Was trying to avoid "dead legs"...and I was successful. What would you do differently?: I could have pushed a little harder, will train on my bike for now, but ultimately, I want Speedplay pedals/shoes. BRING ANOTHER WATER BOTTLE, and hydrate more during the biking Transition 2
Comments: One (tiny) benefit to using regular pedals was not having to change shoes when I got off the bike. i was riding in my running shoes. What would you do differently?: be less messy with my T space Run
Comments: felt good, but got a small cramp in my right calf early on. Had to stop briefly (15-20 seconds) to stretch. Walked a couple of times due to dehydration. Breathing was good, though. Pace was nice and even for most of this leg. What would you do differently?: Could have pushed a little harder if I had a better idea of the overall course before race day. Next time, check it out before the day. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: being exhausted and dehydrated. I know that I was too cautious, too, though. I could have pushed myself harder through the whole thing. I'm satisfied with my results, but I know that I can do better. Event comments: This being my first Tri, I don't have much to compare, but I definitely enjoyed this race. I also liked that they weren't playing obnoxious music before the race. I wish that the announcer giving instructions on the swim had been using a megaphone that worked, instead of emitting the muffled noises that nobody could understand.
