Bike
Comments: Race #1 of 5. Three Loop course near Blue Diamond. Combination single track and jeep trail. Very rocky. Course was not difficult from a technical stand-point, but had a couple of long steep climbs, which were rewarded by some fast descents. Probably pushed my bike uphill for a mile, but to my relief, I wasn't the only one. With each lap I fell farther back from the rest of the group. Had Green Day's "I walk alone" stuck in my head. Kept the rubber side down and finished in one piece. Took Gold Medal for age group. Post race
Warm down: Went back to the hotel, stretched, and soaked in a tub of cold water...slept a couple of hours before heading out for the evening criterium race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not a lot of time on the Mtn. Bike. Event comments: Route was well marked and had support staff on the course. Lt. had talked me into doing the race so he'd have someone to ride with. He ended up having to cancel. Mtn. Biking has never been one of my stronger areas, but the rest of the participants were pretty supportive and I had a lot of fun doing the race. Last updated: 2005-08-20 12:00 AM

Drove into Vegas day before. Found out at Check-in that the race coordinator, Don Albeitz, had died a couple of weeks prior from injuries sustained in a hit and run, while on a training ride.
Night before: Checked over bike, laid out clothing and equipment.
Day of: Had some fruit and granola for breakfast. Checked over bike again.
A 1/4 mile ride and some stretching.
