Swim
Comments: The water was 53* and then probably dropped about 8* at the finish where the spring feeds in. I didn't practice for the open water portion at all and drifted to the left a lot. I was focused on just finishing the swim though, period. What would you do differently?: Drive out there and swim a few times in open water and cold water. Transition 1
Comments: A lot of ppl that I saw in the sprint before us had their bikes in too low a gear and had trouble getting up the hill right out of transition or couldn't get clipped in/feet in shoes. I had neither, of course that probably was due to me being warmer having spent a lot of time in transition. What would you do differently?: Not talk to ppl about how cold it is and just stand there doing nothing. Bike
Comments: I was lucky to have trained on those hills weekly and was used to the wind. Home court advantage :D What would you do differently?: Have a different bike and ride more. Transition 2
Comments: It didn't feel good running on the asphalt with bare feet to transition. Next year they'll have carpet. I had a fast transition, but you have to remember there were about 1000 ppl in the event and we had to run down a corridor of rows and then backtrack to ours starting at the end. I was on row M out of A-Z rows. Then we had a little run to the start of the run portion. What would you do differently?: Run a little faster. Run
Comments: I felt really good. I wish there was a marker at the 1st and 5th mile though. The others were marked. What would you do differently?: Work on running right after biking more. Post race
Warm down: Walked a little bit, drank water and Gatorade, and then stood in line for food...and it was good! What limited your ability to perform faster: Never having done an olympic distance before, not training in cold water, and just lack of general knowledge about tris. This was my 2nd tri, the first being a super sprint and then doing a duathlon. Event comments: This was a great experience. The swim sucked being so cold but I warmed quickly on the bike and felt great the rest of the race. Lack of consistent training would be my only other issue, like most of my races. *736 contestants finished the race. About 20 were pulled out due to hypothermic conditions during the swim.*
I woke up around 3am, ate some oatmeal, toast, and OJ. I then drove from my house out to the site and got body-marked, set up my transition, and relaxed a while. The sprint tri was before ours. I ate a granola bar about 2 hours before the race and a banana about an hour before.
None. Some of the not-so-smart ppl tried "warming up" in the 53* water. I stood on the beach and did shoulder rolls and arm swings a while.
