Swim
Comments: After the hell that was the Firecraker Tri swim, the was a welcome relief. Water was choppy and pushed me around some but I never felt in trouble. Ended up stopping to sight more than I wanted to and found I was weaving around on the course. Probably swam closer to a 1K than the 800m. Got into a bit of a scrum with a few swimmers ahead of me and the fast swimmers in the wave behind me. I think I lost my RoadID during that entanglement. What would you do differently?: Need to get comfortable breathing to my right-hand side. Transition 1
Comments: Slow. I knew it was going to be slower than usual with the run distance from the beach timing mat to transition. I was surprised to find my transition time was in the top half of my group. What would you do differently?: Can't think of anything I would change. Other than being affected by the length of the run to transition, I though I got my gear on as quickly as I'd done in practice. Bike
Comments: I was back on my road bike for this race and it showed just how much aerodynamics affects speed. I did this same course with identical wind conditions over the last month. Using my tri bike during training, I was, on average, 2mph faster. I made the best of it, though. I managed to pass some people on more aero bikes and in more aero positions and didn't get frustrated when others in more aero positions passed me. Heartbreak hill didn't concern me as it's a part of my regular long training ride so I'm used to suffering for a couple of minutes climbing it. I did drink too much for the conditions and how I was feeling. It really affected me on the run. What would you do differently?: Not break the retaining bolt that locks in the stem rise angle on my Felt a week-and-a-half before race day. Transition 2
Comments: Slower than in practice. I had a little bit of trouble getting my socks and shoes on. But I really lost seconds w/ swapping my bike/run number belts. What would you do differently?: Maybe forget about using two number belts for the required bike number and run number. I saw more than a few people use their bike number instead of their run number for the run. Run
Comments: I had trained well in the month leading up to the race but I made two critical errors during the race. The first error was drinking too much on the bike as my stomach was sloshing around for the first 2 miles. But the big mistake was that I went out harder than I should have trying to make up time I lost on the bike and trying to hold off those I had passed on the bike. I paid for it about 4.5 miles in. I ended up walking/shuffling along for the remaining distance. What would you do differently?: Run my own race. Don't worry about whether I get passed as long as I'm running at the pace I can sustain for the entire distance without having to walk. Post race
Warm down: Had a couple glasses of gatorade, a raisin bagel, and a banana. Walked around and got my gear from transition. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not having my tri bike and not running my own race pace. Event comments: My first Tinman Tri. This was a good race and very well organized. Will be racing this again in the future. Last updated: 2009-06-23 12:00 AM

Woke up to the final stage of the TDF. Had a couple slices of toast w/ peanut butter and a cup of coffee.
Parked the car on Kapahulu and took and easy spin on the bike to race check in. Had a gel about a half hour before my start and drank some water and gatorade. It looked like it was going to be a humid day.
