Pre-race routine:

Tim hortons coffe and bagel.
I changed into Tri-top and shorts 1 hr. before race - I was planning to check in and then quickly to put on my wetsuit to stay warm.
Mistake! It took a long time to check in. I shivered my butt off in the wind and rain waiting to sign in.
Event warmup:

Swam around for 5 minutes.
Swim
  • 18m 11s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

Average swim. Felt comfortable but never pushed it. I passed some people from the wave ahead of me but 2 ladies from the wave behind me caught up.

The water was discusting. There was Canada Goose crap all over the shoreline. With all this heavy rain, there must have been tons of crap in the water. I had stomach trouble for a week after the race.
What would you do differently?:

Shove a brita water filter in my mouth as I swam.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

very long run up hill from beach to transition - it added a full 90 seconds to my swim time.

the ground was very soft and muddy.

In side the transition I was very slow. With the rain I decided to use socks to prevent blistering.
Bike
  • 35m 21s
  • 19 kms
  • 32.25 km/hr
Comments:

Decent ride - I was rocking on the flats and downhills but struggling on the uphills. On some downhills I was passing people while I was coasting at 50 km/hr while they were peddaling like mad - then on the uphim they would catch up again. I'm not sure why - maybe because I was on 650c wheels with a nice aggressive aero set-up.

anyways - I had a good back-and-forth with some good riders that allowed me to maintain a decent speed.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more hills
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

The transition zone was a muddy - everything was wet and covered in mud.
Run
  • 26m 32s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 19s  min/km
Comments:

As soon as I started running my quads felt terrible. My hear rate was way out of control. It took 2.5km to get it all back under control.

I still felt fatigued the last 2.5km and I let too many people pass me.
What would you do differently?:

Get more rest the night before
Not do a training run for a few nights before.
Post race
Event comments:

It was a long wait for the awards / drawprizes.
The parking lot was so full of mud i had to help push 5 stuck cars.
