Swim
Comments: WOW, wave start would have been better. Starting around #300 meant that I was constantly swimming over, into, ontop of others. Figured it would be more spread out but about every 20 breaths, bam, into a wall of another group of swimmers. Rinse and repeat for all 500 yards. Didn't let that fluster me too bad but it did mess the rythm up a little but I began to learn that when I felt a big wave (not bubbles from in front like drafting), that someone is about to crash into you from the side. Transition 1
Comments: Glasses, helmet, socks (I know), shoes(I know), garmin, and gone. The bumble bee balloon 1 rack over made finding my rack easy plus the pre-#'d spots are super helpful. Got to the mount line and did a flying mount as 3 others were stopped dead trying to clip in. No pass zone for the first 50 yards to the turn, was in the right gear so just hung out then hammered after the first left turn. What would you do differently?: Learn the shoes on bike routine to save 20 seconds? Also train without socks to build foot toughness. Bike
Comments: Filled aero bottle about 1/2 full and only took 3 sips, why take more water than you need for 40 minutes? Next time, skip water altogether? Really pushed it hard and was pleasantly surprised with the overall speed and time. Constantly passing people which made it like a game of leapfrog. Got passed by 2 and you could hear the disk wheels coming, then watch them go... What would you do differently?: Go fast wheels would be cool to have but in the meantime, keep working on the engine, this hobby is expensive enough. Transition 2
Comments: helmet off, shoes off/on (thanks yankz), grab belt and go. Mentioned to 14 yr old that his helmet was still on as we were leaving t-2. T area was large so times will vary, those with lower starting #'s at a disadvantage because they were off in the corner, farthest from both the bike exit, water exit and run exit. Luck of the draw. What would you do differently?: Glad to have the bike shoes on (mtn bike spd pedals) so running with recessed cleats is easy as the T-area was long. Run
Comments: Didn't bother with water, just ran. Last race was disappointing because my legs cramped really bad which I attributed to the bike and steep hills on the run, this one, no issues at all. Maybe because the run was fairly flat? Last couple of weeks, worked on transition runs after bike and also Tempo runs which seemed to make a big difference with endurance. Now if I could just increase speed. Passed by my AG-37 (John), darn, wonder when he started cause his # was 240 and I was 212. 14yr old boy passed me without aero helmet now, bummer, name on his tri-suit too so didn't feel too bad. What would you do differently?: Keep working on Trans runs and Tempo with intervals for speed work. Push harder but was afraid to because in the Oly's/Internationals, I have been blowing up on the run. Post race
Warm down: Chatted with fellow racers, The Captain, couple of PT solutions guys, and John (who kicked my butt on the run). Ate pizza, few bananas (nice post race food) and water/gatorade. Packed the gear and headed home. Event comments: Organized and on time (congrats given the 1000 racers), big Transition area with pre-#'d racks. Tons of volunteers. Nice Swag too, towel, bag, shirt, etc. Course very well marked and roads were basically closed which made for a safe bike course. Great venue for all, first timers and returners. Woke up way early, got to parking lot around 5:45 which was perfect, close parking, no line at packet pickup. Can't sleep anyway so beat the crowds.
Jogged about 5 minutes, stepped in water to feel temp. Perfect!
