Pre-race routine:

I packed up the night before. As always, due to the excitement of a race, I did not sleep very well. I don't know why I would be excited about racing on a cold rainy day. Well, I got up at 4:30, had a PB&J sandwich and out the door by 5:10. Got to the area by 6:30. It was still pitch black at the park. Just drove around until I found signs of life. The check-in people were nice. Since it was cold, body marking were done on the backs of our hands. Of course, most people will be wearing gloves so I don't think there is a need for it. Unless it is used as a form of identification. Kind of like, "Ahh. Sir, I clocked you going 35 mph in a 25 mph zone. Can I see your registration, bid # and body markings?" I put my bike out on the rack and planned to put the rest of the stuff out there later. Waited in the car to stay dry, warm and catch some power ZZZZs. People started trickling in. I wasn't sure whether I'll be racing in a field of 5 others. That'll probably be the only way for me to get some hardware. Apparently 112 out of around 140 entiants came out to brave the weather and have sloshy sneakers. After a while the parking lot look a little like a "lookout point to watch the submarine races" (old reference to a makeout spot) with all the fogged up car windows. There was a youth race before the adult race so I went to cheer them on. There were 18 kids. It was sooo cute. Their small bikes on the rakes were just hanging in mid-air. It was fun to watch.
Event warmup:

Ran a little. Did some stretches and had a GU.
Run
  • 14m 41s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

It was a mass start with others there were running the 5K running race. Being that it was shorter run and shorter race in general, I decided to try running harder. Not sure if that was a good plan. I did not particularly feel energetic.
What would you do differently?:

Warmup more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Took my gloves off. Felt real off balance changing shoes. Running does that to me. Knowing that I would not be able to put my gloves back on while biking I put them on before taking the bike off the rack. Of course, wet hands and snug gloves don't mix. So that was a little fustrating. Just using gloves in general has its disadvantages. Its like having crab claws for hands. Snapping the helmet on was also a challenge. But its either having ice cubes for hands or crab claws. I chose crab claws. If its good enough for Mr. Krabs (Sponge Bob reference) its good enough for me.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure but something.
Bike
  • 32m 27s
  • 10 miles
  • 18.49 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was nice. Well marked and most turns had volunteers. The first half had some slight down hills. You know what that means, in the physics of cycling, what goes down must go up. Felt kinda sluggish.
What would you do differently?:

Be in better shape.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Calves cramped up each time I pointed my feet to put them in my sneakers. They felt fine when I ran.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out a way to put on my sneakers while keeping my calf muscles stretched.
Run
  • 23m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Squish, Squish, Squish... By this point my socks were soaked. But it was ok, it didn't bother me. First loop, I felt like I was barely moving. Second loop, I felt better and my breathing calmed down.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Chow down on some cookies and stuff.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain. Next time, I'll have to have a chat with Mother Nature.

Event comments:

I would do it again. Nice that it is relatively close to home.
