Sunny
Total Time = 1h 11m 22s
Overall Rank = 40/167
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 4/8
Pre-race routine:

Had coffee and some water..1 slice wheat toast with nat. pb and jelly. drove down with a guy we've met at other races (this was good-I was a bit nervous about driving alone-don't always trust my navigation skills). Set up area and went potty.
Event warmup:

I did a 5 min. jog, walked over to the lake and did a 5 min. easy swim.
Swim
  • 08m 29s
  • 402 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was one of my worst swims (well, I've only had 3 others). It started fast, as I was fighting to get a good postion with 2 other swimmers. It was a quick start, may have been too fast for me to start. THe water was warm (Which I like) but really, really nasty. Brown, with chunks of stuff. Fortunately, the men went first. The guy I drove down with saw a snake slither by in the water at his start. I'm glad I missed that. I held my own but felt tired on this swim. My arms felt heavy.
What would you do differently?:

Not start so fast. Not try to sight so much. I was continually popping my head up to make sure I was on course. I've got to swim more and check less!
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

This included the run from the swim to transition. I was 5/8 in my age group, 49th o'all.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, as opposed to jogging. Note to self: this is a race!!!

I'm attending a transition clinic on saturday morning, led my a tri coach and we are practicing over and over. I hope this helps me get it down.
Bike
  • 32m 49s
  • 11 miles
  • 20.11 mile/hr
Comments:

forgot to clip my shoes on before the race, so I ran with them on. My bike was racked at the far end, so it was a little run with clipless shoes on. Also, I have new aero bars on, but they are still not adjusted (waiting for a stem, I'm pretty stretched out on them), and I lost a pad from them on the way down.

I felt good about this performance. It's my fastest pace (20.1) for the bike in a race. I peddled through the corners and felt great and confident on those, but didn't push it enough on the straightaways. I was able to keep some of the faster riders in my AG in sight for a bit, and actually passed a few people on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Clip shoes on bike. I need to work on my focus during races. I also need to remember I'm racing, and quit "saving" my energy. I was really hungry during the swim, so I downed my powerade on the bike, but I need to eat more. The bike is where I really take a hit, so as always, I need to bike more. And I was messing with changing gears, but couldn't really find the one I wanted to be in. My chain was making clinking noises, so I was probably riding in the wrong gear to avoid the noise. Overall, I'm pleased. I see some progress!
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

I clicked out, squealed to a stop and then clicked out my other foot. WHY??? I've practiced riding with my feet on top of my shoes. I just wasn't thinking. I then ran to the other side of transition with my bike and biking shoes on...
What would you do differently?:

visualize before the race. remember the order of things and what to do...hoping above mentioned clinic will make transitions routine.
Run
  • 26m 55s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

It takes me well into my first mile to get my breathing. Always. It shouldn't b/c I have that minute during transition, but it does. My legs always feel fine/ strong off the bike, but I'm out of breath. I ran the first and second mile under 8:00, but dropped off on the 3rd, and picked it up for the final stretch. I passed alot of people on th run, but once I caught my breath, I should've picked it up and gone faster. This is one of my slower runs, and there's no reason why it should've been. I almost forgot- "HERMOM" was there and as I was making the second loop, she cheered for me...this was a big boost - I did pick it up for a bit after that. amazing what a little crowd support will do for ya!
What would you do differently?:

Run it like a race!
Post race
Warm down:

Drank alot of water. stretched. hung around chatting, ate a 1/2 banana and an oatmeal cookie.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My head. I think I may read one of the books suggested in the training bible for helping focus. I am doing the races for fun, but I am also pretty competitive in that I want to make it to the top of the podium for at least one race. I am not sore at all today or tired, which makes me pretty sure I didn't really run it like a race. It's a season of learning for me!

Event comments:

multirace puts on a good race. the food isn't the best, but I'm not usually hungry right after racing anyway. they are a nice company and work hard to make it a competitive but still relaxed and fun atmosphere.

I was in a rotten mood all the week before the race, wasn't going to do it after my husband dropped out, was just dreading the race. It was a big hurdle to do it, and it was great, so I'm hoping I got over the mental hump. I'm looking forward to the one in sept. - an ocean swim. (memo to self: no more lake swims!!)
