Swim
Comments: Perfect race conditions. The sky was slightly overcast, there was no wind and no waves. This was my first OWS. I lapsed into breaststroke twice for about 5 strokes. I felt a little vertigo about 500m into the race, but it lapsed quickly. What would you do differently?: I still can't decide whether I'm better off wearing a tri jersey for the swim, or trying to pull it on in T1. I did a test run in the shower on Saturday, and it took forever to get the shirt on. Perhaps I should do the whole race shirtless. Transition 1
Comments: I decided not to try the shoes clipped into the bike thing again after the troubles last time and due to the immediate steep uphill out of T1. Other than that, everything was fine. Bike
Comments: I was hoping to crack 20 mph and just missed it. My first sprint with a 12 mile bike was 18.2 mph just a month before on a much flatter course. My second sprint was 18.8 mph two weeks before, also on a flatter course. So I was happy to average 19.8 on a race 50% longer on a course that was essentially always climbing or descending. Although the race was crowded, I didn't see any blatant drafting, but sometimes people got bunched up, primarily while waiting for faster bikes to go by before they could pass. What would you do differently?: Drink more. I carried a full water bottle and a gatorade, and only had a few sips from each. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition overall. The snap came off my race belt, though, when I strapped it on. Why don't they provide extras? What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I think I pushed the bike too hard because my legs felt dead and I felt slightly nauseous the entire run. It's a cruel tease to have the end of the first loop directly approaching the finish banner. Most other races with loops I've seen have the finish branch off so you don't have to run right past it. Post race
Warm down: I walked around and drank water. There were no post-race bananas or bagels, which was annoying. Event comments: I was hoping to break 2 hours, and I did. My goal was based on the advertised distances, but the run was about .15 miles short of advertised. Even if I add in another minute to compensate, I'm still under 2 hours, so no troubles on that account. Last updated: 2009-06-29 12:00 AM

I set the alarm for 5:06 for a 7 am race, and that wasn't enough time. I ate two frozen waffles and drank some OJ. I wasted time on the drive to the race looking for a gas station with a bathroom. I parked a couple miles away from the race site, and biked in. I was next in last at the long line for packet pickup. I barely made it through with little time for setting up transition and a final trip to the port-a-john.
Biking the two miles to the race start 40 minutes before the race started.
