Pre-race routine:

drove into Welland on Friday to visit my family and figured to get a good rest before this race..

woke up and had some oatmeal w/peanut butter and race drink.
Event warmup:

got to the transition area and set up, seemed all very easy. My brother who was with me said "wow, look at all these bikes !"
i got my wetsuit on and went down to swim start.. water was nice and warm, and it started to rain..
Swim
  • 26h 48m
  • 820 yards
  • 3h 16m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

swim was ok .. i cant figure out why my OWS suck so bad.. I was doing ok, til i lifted my head to see where I was, and noticed I was way off course.. nothappy.. got it together-ish and kept making adjustments to stay on course.. this was the best OWS I'd had in a while.. and it wasnt good
What would you do differently?:

dunno.. OWS more and more ?
Transition 1
  • 03m 35s
Comments:

this was a looong run back to transition .. i'm not actually sure if the long run was tacked on here, or if it was part of swim time.. either way, it was ok, suit came off, everything went on , saw/heard my family.. which was great.. got all my bike stuff and biked off into the rain
Bike
  • 58h 32m
  • 18.64 miles
  • 0.32 mile/hr
Comments:

bike was actually good.. the road was a mess. between the puddles and what i call "banged-up road" it was interesting.. got passed by these dudes drafting each other.. passed a bunch of others.. felt the bike was best part of the race for me
Transition 2
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

got back to T2.. and was doing ok, I had covered my shoes with a towel and got changed.. then i ran the wrong way ! d'oh !
What would you do differently?:

not run the wrong way out of T2
Run
  • 48h 32m
  • 4.66 miles
  • 10h 24m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

i was doing great until the 5 Km sign, when a muscle in my leg, above my knee started to tighten and tighten some more. I had to stop and walk for a few minutes and started to run again when it let up. It tightened again a K later.. stopped, walked.. then powered throught ther last 1.5 K to finish the run
What would you do differently?:

figure out what caused this muscle problem - first time I've experienced it.
Post race
Warm down:

came into the finish chute and my family and friends were right there.. it was great .. looked for some ice and tried to stretchout a bit.. had some watermelon and water..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bad swim and sore knee

Event comments:

the tri was a great race and am looking forward to 2010. there was also a Du, and a "try a tri" .. saw in the paper the next day that maybe a HIM might be added next year.. hmm..
