Age Group Rank = 12/16
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:50. Bagel with PB, sipped gatorade for breakfast at 5:00. To transition at 5:45, setup. Go over setup repeatedly and trying to visualize since hadn't done one in almost 7 years. Cliff bar 1 hr prior to race.
Event warmup:

Stretching, swam 25-50m before elites went off.
Swim
  • 23m 41s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

Stayed to the back and outside and tried to relax for the 1st straight before the 1st buoy. Led to a longer turn. Continued to stay outside on the backstretch and moved in after that. I felt slow on the 1st lap, but was actually faster. I felt pretty good overall. Probably could have pushed it more here. Legs started to cramp up near the end of swim. Maybe not used to swim position in wetsuit? Didn't have a problem the rest of the way with this.
What would you do differently?:

Would have started more upfront and trusted my swim ability. I lost some time in the beginning trying to stay outside to avoid contact.
Transition 1
  • 04m 38s
Comments:

Long run from water to bike. Wetsuit came off great, thanks BodyGlide! Didn't race in tri-shorts so rocked the speedo/tri-top underneath the wetsuit and threw on cycling shorts for the bike. Rolled my socks, but still had hard time getting them on. Bike exit was crowded and had to wait a few seconds to get over the mat. Mount line was a cluster.
What would you do differently?:

Probably race in tri-shorts next time as it would have made T1 easier. Run faster up to transition...didn't exactly bust it up there. Should have practiced T1 a few times to simulate race.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 3s
  • 24.71 miles
  • 18.29 mile/hr
Comments:

I may be the worst climber on the planet. Originally hoping for 1:20's on bike since I had only 5 training rides in preparation. Then after seeing course and feeling wind in the morning, I didn't know what to expect. So, very happy with my time.

Headwind was pretty brutal at times, but tail wind on 100th st. and some of the downhills coming back made it all worth it. Couldn't even use my biggest gear on some of the downhills because I was spinning too much. Awesome feeling.

Overall, I wasn't prepared for the bike and I knew it. Especially for the hills and wind. The bike took alot out of me and I new it as soon as I got off in T2.
What would you do differently?:

More saddle time, rinse repeat. Actually ride hills in training. This probably wasn't the optimal course/conditions to take my grand total of 5 training rides into competition. Oh well, the downhills were fun! Special thanks to my brother-in-law for letting me use his 700X23's (and better front wheel) for the race. Really carried speed better with these over my stock POS 700X25's.
Transition 2
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

My moron moment. I just couldn't find my rack space. I even counted racks before the race and walked pre-race from bike in to T2, but still missed it. I was looking for about 1:30 for my spot...at least. My colored towel didn't help. Once I racked, I thought I was good. Helmet off, bike shoes off, bike shorts off, run shorts on, run shoes on, race belt and out.
What would you do differently?:

Locate my spot. Felt like a complete idiot. Again, tri-shorts to cut down on change time.
Run
  • 52m 57s
  • 6.22 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Remember that lack of cycling training? Well, my quads did as soon as I started. Bike just took so much out of me. Pretty much just held on for the run. I was hoping for about a minute/mile faster than this, but I just had nothing left. Felt happy that I pushed through the last 2 miles of really feeling dead-legged.
What would you do differently?:

Train the bike harder and more pace in my running training.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with water for a few minutes before grabbing some food. Ate pulled pork with the family and laid in the grass wondering which muscles would be the most sore the next day as I tried to explain to my 2 yr old what daddy just did.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training time, particularly the bike, but volume in general. Some weeks would only train the run 1X due to aches and pains. 1st tri in 7 years so very happy to be in 2:40's.

Event comments:

Great race put on by Bill and Win Multisports. Well organized and top shelf in terms of the race packets, course design, organization, etc. Hard to believe it was only a 2nd year race.

Special thanks to the tri-rochester club for letting us tag along with my sister/brother in law to the nice, relaxing post race get together in the absolutely gorgeous Rochester weather. It was a nice way to end our trip before the 10 hour drive back to Cincy.
