Swim
Comments: Finished 18th overall for males and 21 for all participants in the swim (See Above). I am not a big fan of pool swims in races, especially when you start at the tail end of the group in individual timed starts. The pool gives me a feeling of claustrophobia, and I much prefer open water swims even with the wrestling of a shotgun start. Because I was starting at the rear there were a large nuber of beginers ahead of me, many who were slower, and even more who stopped and stood at the end of each lane making it very difficult to flip turn or turn and push off the wall in general. But as I said, my starting position was of my own doing, I am very supportive of beginers (I am one myself), and my swim times have always left a lot to be desired. Wow, must have been the extra effort put into getting past slower swimers in less then 25 meters, but I had my best swim time ever! What would you do differently?: Register earlier for the race! Transition 1
Comments: Overall it was a good transition. I am always concerned that I might have forgoten something in set-up, and I quickly discovered that I had forgoten to put my computer on the bike, I also forgot to hit the chrono button on my watch so I had no idea of my time, speed, or cadence. But based upon my swim, maybe this is a good omen. What would you do differently?: Make sure the computer is on the bike. Prees the timer button on my watch at the start. Bike
Comments: Nice bike ride. I think that I might have been able to push a little harder had I had my computer to gauge speed and cadence, but I am pleased especially given that I only had a couple of rides totalling 36 miles in the two weeks prior to the race. What would you do differently?: mount the computer to the bike, put in more traing. Transition 2
Comments: I tried to save time by racking the bike bars first on the rack and completly forgot about the areo drink bottle which prevented this and had to pull the bike out, turn it around and rack it seat first giving up precious seconds. What would you do differently?: Rack the bike as god intended instead of trying to short cut it. Run
Comments: I ran a nice easy pace but not up to my normal ability. I have been nursing a sore ankle and so did most of my workouts on the eliptical, only running twice in the two weeks leading up to the race and there is no substitue for the real thing! What would you do differently?: Train a little more prior to the a race. Post race
Warm down: Walked it off and re-fueled. What limited your ability to perform faster: Reduced training, and poor planning (Sign-up, computer, and stop watch). Event comments: This is a nice race, Finish Strong is to be commended once again for pulling off another well organized event, and I can not say enough good things about Rebecca Warriner, the founder and producer of the race. She is an amazing lady and this event raises a lot of money for a good cause. This was my first ever event just one year ago in it's inagural year and I plan on making it an annual event. Just as I have improve vastly over last year, so has this event. The only clitch was that because they forgot to enter my gender, maybe I look gender neutral, my times did not post until the day after the race so I got to watch someone else accept my medal on the podium, but there are more races to come, more hills to climb, and more opportunites to place and it is always nice to see others rewarded for their efforts. Overall Rank = 38/401
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/20
Side Note: I include all participants, female and male in the "Number of overall contestants" because, well quite frankly, there are a large number of female athletes who are just plain better then me and so they all are and should be included in the overall group.
Now to the race. I had an out of town obligation scheduled for the weekend of the race and so did not register and it filled up quickly two weeks out and I missed the cut. Fortunately there where a few cancelations and a slot opened for me but it was in the back of the pack and so I started 364th out of 400. A full hour and 6 minutes after the first triathlete hit the course and almost two minutes after Doug, who started 3rd in line had completed the course. Having said that, I needed every minute of the time, three visits to the plastic confessionals to the triathlon god of instant weight loss. Not due so much to nerves as the portion of Honey Dew Mellon that I had consumed the prior day.
I was able to get some running in, full streching and limited warm up in the pool and felt good by the time my number was called.
