Swim
Comments: I was worried a little bit about the start because there wasn't much room to spread out before we got going. But it turned out to be pretty good. I found some space right away, and there were so many people around that I could draft well for quite a while. The leg out to the end of the rectangle was solid and smooth, but coming back in, I couldn't see anything! The sun was exactly where I had to look for the bouys, and I caught myself off target several times. What would you do differently?: I really need to get some tinted goggles. I could have saved about a minute if I hadn't gotten off target. Transition 1
Comments: This was yet another long transition. Up a hill from the pond, across the lawn and down and back the full length of the transition area. I managed to jog the whole time, though, which was good. Pretty smooth after getting to my bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing much. Bike
Comments: I powered out of transition up to an 18 mph average pretty quickly, which I held for a few miles before dialing it back and knowing I could maintain and/or cut myself some slack and still beat my goal. I always feel like crap at some point on the bike. This time it was between miles 6 and 14ish when we had a stupid headwind that made me feel like I was back in the Midwest. But my legs woke up again around mile 14, and the rest of the ride felt pretty easy. What would you do differently?: Nothing much. I wanted to make sure I saved some for the run. Transition 2
Comments: The dismount line came up more quickly than I had anticipated, so I couldn't hop off my bike like I had planned. Still, I found my rack quickly, slipped on my socks, and was off pretty quickly. Again, we had to go the length of the transition area twice during this transition. Run
Comments: My goal was 12-minute miles. It took a good mile for my legs to wake up. I felt very good and strong from mile 2 through 4. Took a couple steps at mile markers three and four and walked 10 or 15 seconds at mile marker 5 since I had developed a side stitch. I ran with that stitch for the last mile plus, but I freaking did it. At one point I glanced at my watch and saw 3:07 when I was pretty close to the end, and I was sure it had stopped on its own about a mile back, but it was still ticking. What would you do differently?: Nothing! Post race
Warm down: Cold sponges, ice-cold water, and a spray down with a handy hose. After that, I felt great and ready for the BBQ. What limited your ability to perform faster: It definitely started to get a little toasty at the end of the run. I don't think I could wring anything else out of my legs, though. Event comments: This is a great race. Beautiful course, well organized, fun vibe after the race. Last updated: 2005-08-23 12:00 AM

Woke up with raging nerves. English muffin and peanut butter, make sure everything was packed, woke up Anna, and packed up the truck while she got ready. We were driving down with our neighbors, Cate and Cory, so we got his bike in my truck as well and hit the road.
Walking around, missing the big group BT shot, taking a few strokes in the pond. It was going to be a long day, so I tried to stay calm and take it easy. I couldn't wait to get going so the nerves could go away!
