Pre-race routine:

Got up @ 4:30 had some wheat bread & milk. Got to race and then about an hour before start had Clif bar and Ensure. Drank some gatorade about 10mins before walk to beach (approx 6:35). Got to race site approx 5:40, free parking by transition area was nice. Set up transition area on rack and took walk around to get familiar with the swim course while listening to ipod. Just tried to relax which I failed to do in first tri.
Event warmup:

Swam in ocean for about 10mins to get comfortable in wetsuit. Ocean was like glass, very calm, approx 74degrees. Could not ask for it to be any better.
Swim
  • 07m 41s
  • 587 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Watched the first wave start and then slowly swam out to buoy. Started on the far left and wanted to go off with a nice easy pace this time instead of HR spike like last time. Mission accomplished, I was able to breathe every third stroke, sighted every 30-40 secs and slowly moved to middle of "lane". Think the overall distance is slightly off. i stopped swimming to soon so had to cover more ground getting out of ocean then i anticipated. HR spiked while trying to get out of water and seemed like a nice long run to timing mat.
What would you do differently?:

Swim until I can touch the sand!!!! Otherwise I was very comfortable with my swim pace and breathing. Wetsuit made it even smoother and more efficient that I knew I was easily under 1:30/100. Definite improvement from first tri.
Transition 1
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

I had laid out my bike shoes on towel and got the wetsuit off relatively easy when i got to T1. I had unzipped it and down to my waist w/in 10-20 secs of off the beach. First time wearing it in race so not sure what to expect but happy that had no issues here. Put glasses and helmet on (left them on my aero bars) and took the bike to mount area.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Practice with bike shoes on bike as that may save some time.
Bike
  • 34m 57s

  • 19.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Since I had my shoes on I needed to get on my bike and clip them in first, which I was very concerned about, only took me two times so did not embrass myself by falling down. Slid off my seat, not sure if that was due to my tri suit being wet...(at least that is what i am telling myself).I was average 18-20mph which i was very comfortable with and was able to use aero bars for most of the straightaways. Some turns I thought were very tight but that was the course. Overall I liked the bike course as it was challenging, potholes around the lake were a little bothersome. Some riders really pushed it around turns, one came close to hitting me and yelled at me even though I was on my line. Oh well.

Seeing the wife and kids (and friends who came) on all three laps was awesome and gave me the extra boost! Liked that fact.
What would you do differently?:

Start with shoes on bike. Looking at the results this is where I started to lose time as I need to be averaging over 20mph (that will come w/ time). My cadence was probably around 95. Will work on this over the winter. First race with shoes and aero bars, probably get in aero position a little more. Also for some reason I was not drinking!!!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

I thought I took more time getting my running shoes on (of course I had to run w/ socks so needed to get them on also). Overall time in T2 was fine as once I learn to run w/o socks that will help. Racked bike quickly had helmet off, shoes on and off I went. Very comfortable standing at station and putting everything on w/o needing to lean on anything.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to run w/o socks so do not need to fidget with them, otherwise not much else.
Run
  • 26m 53s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Keeping cool - how in the world are you suppose to keep cool running on a boardwalk with NO shade (except for when you ran through the casino and convention hall)? Overall I knew I my pace was a little slow and looking at results, I need to work on this. Felt like my ass was dragging for the first half or so. 5 mins out of T1 someone threw up right in front of me so i had that lovely sight in brain for the run...joy joy.
Loved the cold towel at the end.
What would you do differently?:

RUN FASTER....My orignal goal had been under 9min miles so no compliants.
Post race
Warm down:

as other have said, best damn post race breakfast burrito.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to continue training, specially on the run.

Event comments:

Congrats to Chris and his team as this was the inaugural event of Born to Tri and really enjoyed it. Thought it was well organized (grant it only my second tri). Only comments are change how to start the swim (starter pistol and his voice were drowned out by music), and maybe close off bike course a little better. Thought volunteers were perfectly placed and very helpful.

Course: Run out of T2 and around lake then up & down boardwalk. The run course was actually nice as running along the shore, even though the sun was radiating and felt like 100 degrees out there! Course was advertised as 3.5miles but believe it was changed to 3.1. Liked the new course better then the old per maps.
