Swim
Comments: Started calf-deep in the water. Couple steps and a couple dolphin dives before I started swimming. First hundred yards I saw people back and to the right and left. Soon, though, there was nobody. I figured somebody was right behind me. Knew I was in front (somehow), but it wasn't until I was nearing the beach that I realized I had a decent gap from the field. This was the first time I was in the lead in a race. When the crowd cheered for me as I got out of the water, I felt wonderful. Couldn't believe it, but it felt great. What would you do differently?: Nothing at all. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty good transition. No problems at all. Got up to speed and feet into shoes pretty easily. Felt great. What would you do differently?: Maybe work on putting on the helmet and taking off the wetsuit at the same time. Not too concerned about it though. Bike
Comments: Knew I wouldn't be able to hold my lead here. I pushed, but didn't kill myself. 2 3/4 miles before I was passed the first time and nearly 5 miles before I was passed again. Shouted encouragement as people passed by. Was passed by Ben about 10 miles into the ride. Tried to keep my pace over 20 whenever I could, and succeeded for the most part. Only felt my back complain a few times. Had a very good last 1/4 mile or so pulling feet out of shoes and running quickly into the transition area. What would you do differently?: No back issues so I could have trained on the bike better. Transition 2
Comments: Very good transition. Legs felt better than I thought they would. Made for a very fast T2 What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Run went better than I thought it would. Wasn't passed by anybody, but also didn't pass anyone. Had Ben in my sights for most of the run, but I just couldn't pick up the pace enough to close the gap. Now and then I'd feel alright and pick up the pace a bit, but just as often felt like I had to slow a little too. Finished strong and felt like I couldn't really have given much more. What would you do differently?: See bike comment. Post race
Warm down: Stagger about. Sweaty hug with the wife. Eventually stretched a little bit. Visited with fellow racers. Walked around and cheered as others finished their race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training earlier in the season due to back issues and only slowly building up training volume and intensity more recently. Event comments: I was very happy with my performance. I'd certainly consider doing this race again. Last updated: 2009-07-06 12:00 AM

Fell asleep at ~12:15. Slept fitfully. Alarm went off at 4:15. Ugh.
Oatmeal, peanut butter toast, muffin. Loaded up the car and drove to St. Cloud. Went straight to the transition area and got a great spot right by the bike in/out. Visited briefly with Ben and Emily. Also saw a couple other people from previous races. That's always nice. Got everything set up and went for a warm-up run.
Ran about a mile and came back to stretch. Half paid attention to the pre-race meeting. Accidently glurped about twice as much bulk energy gel into my mouth than I intended. Yuck.
Swam about 100 yards before the start of the swim. Felt good.
