Overall Rank = 28/83

Age Group Rank = 4/9
Pre-race routine:

We stayed in the Best Western right near the course. Chocolate donut from downstairs and some dry cereal. Breakfast of champions.
Event warmup:

None; other than wading into water
Swim
  • 42m 39s
  • 1584 yards
  • 02m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Conditions were fairly good except some chop and undercurrent mostly near the turn around.
What would you do differently?:

I would still go wide around the first turn to avoid carnage, but I would not have proceeded to head 100 meters out to sea. This left me pulling up to find that I was all alone. Fortunately, I picked a distant buoy and angled back in. Given my predisposition to wandering in open water I should have remembered my previous 6 strokes on a side and look ratio.
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

This being my first triathlon I did not try the shoes on the bike trick. I just took the time to put everything on in the order I had it laid out beforehand. Things went pretty smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Bike
  • 1h 18m 1s
  • 25 miles
  • 19.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I was really happy with my performance on the bike; especially given the road conditions. I thought this would be my weakness, but it turned out to be the swim. I actually just enjoyed zipping along on a sunny, summer day.
What would you do differently?:

Very Little
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

I was a little slow as I forgot to take my shirt off until just before setting out.
What would you do differently?:

Have a better order of steps in mind; I was so worried about T1 that I really did not think about T2.
Run
  • 47m 57s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

I really held back the first lap and even part of the second. I have a habit of going out too fast otherwise (My one and only marathon 8 years ago). I was determined to only walk for a 20 yards at the water stations on 2-3 occasions and otherwise keep a steady pace.
What would you do differently?:

Since I now have my first triathlon complete I would take more risks in the next one and push the pace earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

4 bananas, 3 nectarines?, 2 muffins, and water. Oh, and I waded back into Lake Michigan too. That felt great.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience and poor swim navigation. The 15-20 extra pounds I carry around probably did not do me any favors either.

Event comments:

I love the fact that my first triathlon had only 82 people (less risk of carnage). I really wanted a race that took the swim in Lake Michigan. We ended up having a nice day despite the rainstorm overnight. The concept of multiple laps really did not bother me at all, but the pavement was a disaster, but it is a cute little venue without traffic or crowds.

5 Laps!, I actually did not mind laps since it made it easy to tell where you were in the race. Some people did not appreciate it.
Wind: Some
Course: Horrible sections of road (Picture Sarajevo) and narrow walking trails. I knew this going from reading this website so no surprises. It rained the morning before the race so things were pretty wet the first two laps and you had to go through puddles. On the plus side all the potholes and water made my $300 Craigslist bike (Giant OCR2, circa 2004) perform pretty well against more expensive competition.

Course: Pavement was horrible, but it did not really bother me on the run (as opposed to the bike). It was a beautiful sunny day and there was a breeze that picked up during the end of the bike that felt really good on the run.
